‘A serious concern’ – Rangers fans fume at ‘horrendous’ player after ‘embarrassing’ incident vs Porto

Rangers’ European campaign this season ended in defeat on Thursday as they collapsed to lose 3-1 to Porto.

Despite going 1-0 up early on through Djeidi Gassama, Danny Rohl’s side were unable to hold on long, as the Portuguese giants cruised to a victory.

Three goals before half-time put the game out of sight for the visitors as they were unable to find an answer to their impressive attack.

While Rangers were already out of the Europa League going into the game, it will be a disappointing result for the Old Firm side as their winning run in all competitions came to an end.

However, while a defeat was expected going into the match, fans were far from happy with Jack Butland for how he handled Porto’s second goal.

Rangers fans furious as Jack Butland mistake allows Porto to score

Butland has put in some positive performances for Rangers this season. However, he was far from on form on Thursday.

The goalkeeper struggled to keep Porto at bay and let in a howler for the hosts’ second.

Butland and James Tavernier both collided when going for a loose ball, which allowed Francisco Moura to place the ball into an empty net.

As a result, many Rangers fans were fuming with the goalkeeper for allowing Porto to take the lead with such ease.

How poor was Butland vs Porto?

Butland did not have his best game against Porto.

According to Fotmob on 29 January, the goalkeeper only made one save, underperformed his goal prevention rate by -0.31, on top of the mistake he made.

With Rangers in the midst of the Scottish Premiership title race, Rohl cannot afford to have an out-of-form keeper going into the second half of the campaign.

Therefore, he needs to ensure that Butland’s poor display was solely just a blip in a match that was, at the end of the day, a dead rubber.

If not, the goalkeeper could end up costing the Gers a title after they have done so well to put themselves back into a position to win the league after a terrible start under Russell Martin.
