Bernardo Silva update: Man City contract talks collapse, next club reveal

Bernardo Silva is expected to leave Manchester City at the end of the season, with contract talks hitting an impasse.

The midfielder’s current deal expires in the summer, and, despite having made 38 appearances across all competitions this season, an extension does not appear imminent.

Silva joined Man City from Ligue 1 side Monaco in 2017 and has made nearly 450 appearances in the years since, winning the Premier League six times.

But he has been clear about his eventual desire to depart the Etihad Stadium, with an exit having looked close in previous years.

Man City’s transfer team are expected to weigh up their options in the coming months, with Silva’s presence not going to be easy to replace.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on Friday that several big European clubs want Silva if he leaves on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed an exceptional nine years at the Etihad Stadium, and remains a key part of Pep Guardiola’s side.

But this summer may well represent the final chance for the Portugal international to make one more big move.

Matteo Moretto reported on Saturday that there are no ongoing negotiations to renew Silva’s contract at Man City, with his exit appearing all but confirmed.

There is already an inkling of where he may be heading, too. Speaking in September last year, then-Benfica manager Bruno Lage said: “One day, regardless of the coach or the president, Bernardo will return to Benfica.”

The former Wolves boss has since been sacked, with Jose Mourinho now the man in the dugout for the Portuguese giants.

Who are the favourites to sign Silva?

Interestingly, Benfica do not feature among the main contenders for Silva’s next club, according to one major bookmaker.

Atletico Madrid are the favourites at 3/1, with Barcelona and Juventus boasting the same odds of signing the midfielder.

Past that, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and PSG are all expected to be involved in the summer’s conversation.

Man United and Arsenal represent the main contenders from the Premier League, but Silva’s loyalty to Man City will likely rule such a move out.
