Bruno Guimaraes has missed Newcastle United’s Premier League match against Liverpool on Saturday evening due to an ankle injury.

The Brazilian midfielder missed Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa last Sunday due to the ankle injury he suffered against PSV in the Champions League last week.

Bruno travelled with the Newcastle squad for their 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night but he was left on the bench as an unused substitute.

When asked about Bruno’s absence before kick-off at Anfield, Eddie Howe said: ‘There has been no setback.

‘He was on the bench in name on Wednesday but we weren’t really going to lose him.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Howe had raised doubt over Bruno’s availability for the trip to Liverpool.

‘It’s slightly unknown at the moment,’ Howe said.

‘I’d say he did really well to be with us in Paris – I think that was down to the fact he was desperate to be there and to support the players.

‘He did very, very light training, he participated in that but it was next to nothing, to be honest.

‘He trained with us yesterday but that was more of a test so we’ll see how he is today. This will be the day really where we decide.’
