Celtic fans want Wilfried Nancy sacked and Martin O’Neill back in charge after a dismal start to the Frenchman’s time in charge of the club.

Celtic lost 3-1 to St Mirren in the Premier Sports Cup final on Sunday (14 December) to pile more pressure on Nancy less than two weeks into his tenure.

The Frenchman has overseen defeats in each of his three games in charge so far, with Hearts and Roma both beating Celtic to leave them floundering in the Premiership and Europa League.

Many Celtic fans want Nancy sacked already after three poor performances, and his authority and suitability for the job are being questioned after he had only managed in Canada and the USA prior to his arrival.

Football Insider have revealed that Celtic are not planning to sack Nancy despite external pressure, but the supporters have one man in mind who they want to see return.

Martin O’Neill oversaw a successful interim spell at Celtic

Club legend O’Neill was appointed as Celtic’s interim boss following Brendan Rodgers’ October exit, and he did a superb job, given the circumstances, with seven wins in his eight games in charge.

He only signed a rolling contract until a new permanent manager was hired, but Football Insider revealed last month that O’Neill was happy to stay at Celtic until the end of the season after such a strong spell back in charge.

The Hoops’ board members were adamant that they wanted to bring in a long-term Rodgers replacement and instead went for Nancy, despite the 73-year-old restoring a feel-good factor that has now evaporated once again.

O’Neill spoke live on talkSPORT on Monday (15 December) and admitted that he would have stayed at the club for the rest of the campaign if he had been offered the chance to, saying: “If they had asked me to stay on, I would have done so.

“The minute they said ‘no, listen, that’s your time,’ that was fine by me.”

Celtic fans want Nancy gone and O’Neill back in charge

Taking to X after their cup final loss, many Celtic fans have called upon the club to reinstate O’Neill and relieve Nancy of his duties as soon as possible.

One fan posted to say: “This is infuriating. The club should hold their hands up, take immediate action to fire Wilfried Nancy, and bring Martin O’Neill (and Maloney and Fozzy etc.) back before Christmas.

Another said: “Has he (Nancy) not been fired yet? Dermot Desmond should be on the phone right now begging Martin O’Neill to come back.”

While one added: “Wilfried Nancy’s in serious trouble already despite only being appointed. He is not good enough and also to be fair the squad are being shown up. Get Martin O’Neill back in charge.”
