Championship relegation battle: Supercomputer predicts Leicester and West Brom’s fate after stunning Oxford update

West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City have fallen into further difficulty after Oxford United sensationally beat Preston North End on Friday.

Michal Helik, Will Lankshear and Ciaron Brown scored to rule Milutin Osmajic’s goal irrelevant and lift Matt Bloomfield’s side out of the relegation zone.

The U’s now sit above West Brom on goal difference, with the situation looking more and more desperate for both the Baggies and Leicester by the week.

It was confirmed at The Hawthorns this week that James Morrison will see out the season as interim head coach after Eric Ramsay’s nine-game horror tenure.

Leicester appointed Gary Rowett last month, but the 52-year-old has, so far, been unable to coax a victory out of his new players.

Supercomputer worsens Championship situation

Ironically, it was new Leicester manager Rowett who was sacked by Oxford in December after leaving the club in a difficult position.

His side had won just one of their last 10 games and had already slipped into the Championship’s relegation zone.

Bloomfield was appointed in January and has looked to provide hope at the Kassam Stadium over the last few months.

After a run of seven consecutive games without a win, Oxford beat West Brom last month, and backed it up with a stunning win at Deepdale on Friday.

Preston sit 12th in the Championship, but they were dominated by the U’s, who enjoyed four big chances and created over double the expected goals (xG).

Former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider this week that Sheffield Wednesday face another points deduction at the start of next season, with the Owls already relegated.

The talk is about who will join them in League One, however, and the situation has worsened for the Championship giants in the race after Friday’s action.

Opta’s supercomputer has boosted West Brom’s chances of going down to 59.04 per cent, and Leicester’s to 41.22 per cent, while Oxford remain a strong contender at 54.88 per cent despite their big win.

Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth not out of the woods

Blackburn Rovers have lifted themselves out of the relegation zone since appointing Michael O’Neill on a deal until the end of the season.

The Northern Irishman’s team sit three points clear of Oxford and West Brom, while Portsmouth, who also had been in contention for the drop, find themselves with a four-point buffer.

But the supercomputer has not yet ruled out trouble for either team. Portsmouth have just a 9.48 per cent chance of facing the drop and can feel confident about their safety.

Blackburn, however, remain in some bother with a 29.26 per cent chance of joining Sheffield Wednesday.
