Championship sack race: New favourite named after ‘unbelievable’ development

Valerian Ismael is the latest manager to be dismissed in the Championship, in what is a season full of sackings.

Ismael was dismissed by Blackburn Rovers on Monday, after a ninth consecutive game across all competitions without a win.

And Rovers were rewarded for their decision when they instantly put an end to that run with a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday.

It has been a difficult start to the year for Championship managers, with Leicester City sacking Marti Cifuentes last month.

The Spaniard was the second of the year to go, after West Brom dismissed Ryan Mason at the start of January.

Eric Ramsay leads Championship sack race

West Brom sacked Mason just 28 days ago, but, unbelievably, it is his replacement, Eric Ramsay, who leads the bookies’ race for the next Championship manager to be sacked.

The Baggies have lost three of their four games since the 33-year-old was appointed, and are in serious danger of relegation.

Blackburn‘s win on Tuesday has now seen Ramsay’s side drop into the relegation zone, with no immediate escape route in sight.

Sporting director Andrew Nestor left West Brom earlier this week, amid a time of huge turmoil at The Hawthorns.

There is an awareness that the problems run far deeper than Ramsay, but the manager has not helped himself, either.

West Brom have conceded 12 goals in just four games since his arrival, including 5-0 and 3-0 losses to Norwich City and Portsmouth, respectively.

If the Baggies are to survive, the former Man United coach will need to set up his team to grind out some results.

Ramsay leads the sack race at 5/4 according to one major bookmaker, and he is followed by Chris Davies (5/1) and Henrik Pedersen (11/2).

Footage reveals serious problems for Ramsay

Isaac Price has often been a shining light for West Brom this season, but, along with the rest of the players, he has lost the fans due to recent performances.

In footage captured by AllAlbionFans and posted to social media, the 22-year-old was seen standing in front of the away end after Saturday’s loss to Portsmouth.

Fans chanted “you’re not fit to wear the shirt”, but something else appeared to bother Price, who was held back before storming back towards the dressing room.

Ramsay will need the supporters on side if he is to turn around West Brom’s season, but his side will need to show some effort to win them back.
