Craig Moore’s Jack Butland assessment proves why new goalkeeper is needed in latest Rangers news
Craig Moore’s damning assessment of Jack Butland shows exactly why Rangers need a new goalkeeper.
The former England international has been the Gers’ number one for three consecutive seasons, since signing from Crystal Palace in 2023.
However, during this time, he has not been without his faults, with the 33-year-old making plenty of mistakes that have led to points being dropped.
Speaking to the Daily Record on 1 April, Moore is quick to highlight this, insisting that Butland has a “big mistake in him” when assessing his abilities.
Below, Football Insider has examined what this could mean for Rangers’ transfer strategy in the summer.

Craig Moore: Jack Butland is a concern for Rangers
Butland has come under plenty of criticism this season.
Despite a bright start to the campaign, the goalkeeper has made a series of terrible errors that have cost the Gers both vital points in the Scottish Premiership and the Europa League.
Jack Butland’s Scottish Premiership stats this season Per 90 minutes Saves 2.97 Save percentage 78% Errors led to goals 0.10 Goals prevented 0.24 Clean sheets 0.39
However, with Liam Kelly proving to be just as unreliable, Danny Rohl has been forced to stick with Butland.
Now, Moore has admitted that he is concerned about Butland’s quality ahead of a decisive period in the title race.
He said: “We talk about you’ve got to be mad to be a goalkeeper and all sort of stuff – Jack doesn’t strike me as that.
“But it’s a position where, unfortunately, you make a mistake, and you’re picking it out at the back of your net.
“I feel, unfortunately, that as good a goalkeeper as he is and the saves that he’s made and what have you, I always have the feeling there’s a big mistake in him and that’s a big concern for me.
“What is important in our experience of winning things? A goalkeeper is an absolute must. Winning your points rather than losing your points.”
Unfortunately for Butland, everything that Moore said is true. While the goalkeeper can step up in big moments, he is simply too inconsistent and can cost you points in the simplest of matches.
Therefore, if Rangers want to dominate Scottish football once more and compete in Europe, they must target a new goalkeeper.
Rohl simply cannot afford to have someone in the net who can cost you points in a division where you have to win almost every match to win the title most seasons.
Hopefully, there will be money to invest in this department in the summer so Rangers can finally find a long-term solution to this problem.
What are Rangers’ summer transfer window plans?
Former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness has exclusively told Football Insider that Rangers should focus on signing upcoming talents in the hopes of selling them on for a profit.
This would see a change in transfer strategy for Jim Gillespie, who has replaced Patrick Stewart as Rangers’ new chief executive.
The upcoming summer transfer window could be crucial to the Gers, with Celtic already weakened, and Heart of Midlothian unlikely to maintain their stay at the top of the division long-term.
As a result, there is a chance that Rangers can once again become the number one club in Scotland for years to come if they get their transfer activity spot on.
However, it remains to be seen if they are able to achieve this.
