Crystal Palace vs KuPS ref watch: Three decisions Igal Frid got wrong at Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace’s Europa Conference League clash with KuPS had some interesting decisions from referee Igal Frid on Thursday.

In addition to a red card for Clinton Antwi, Palace saw a penalty kick call denied, a decision which was backed up by VAR, as the Premier League side struggled on 18 December.

Christantus Uche continued his fine scoring form when netting the opening in fantastic style, only for the visitors to score twice in three second-half minutes, silencing Selhurst Park.

Justin Devenny struggled earlier in the competition, but the youngster popped up with a vital equalising goal. Yet, the Eagles were forced to settle for a play-off spot, rather than qualify for the next round automatically.

With such an important game for Palace, here are some of the things that the referee got wrong.

Igal Frid stamps his authority far too early

Inside the opening three minutes, Borna Sosa had already seen his name taken by the referee after pulling back Clinton Antwi, and the referee felt the need to take action.

While it was a cynical foul, the KuPS defender was going absolutely nowhere, and it seemed like a very unnecessary booking to make after just a handful of minutes at Selhurst Park.

Christantus Uche avoids an obvious sanction for diving

With Palace just going behind, in an attempt to win a penalty for his side, Uche threw himself to the floor, looking back at the referee and expecting the whistle to be blown for a spot-kick.

Unsurprisingly, no decision was awarded in his favour. The striker was actually lucky not to be cautioned for simulation, and up until that point, it was a respectful performance from the 22-year-old.

Ibrahim Cisse allowed to get away with tactical foul on Uche

The referee set a precedent with his early yellow card for Sosa, and so when Ibrahim Cisse went crashing into a challenge on Uche from behind, he had the entire home section of the stadium on his case.

Despite the rashness of the challenge, stopping Palace’s attack on the halfway line, Frid left his cards in his pocket, leaving many frustrated, and not just the supporters, as Glasner walked up and down his technical area.
