Danny Rohl u-turns after new John Souttar injury, Rangers did fear the worst

Danny Rohl has provided an injury update on Rangers star John Souttar.

In early October, Rangers were in disarray after sacking head coach Russell Martin just 17 games into his tenure.

Months on from Rangers fans trying to stop their own team leaving Falkirk’s stadium, with Martin given a police escort away from the stadium, things are much rosier at Ibrox.

Rangers then turned to Danny Rohl to steady the ship, something he has achieved, with the Scottish giants now back in a title race after sitting eighth in the aftermath of Russell’s dismissal.

But Rohl is yet to get a win under his belt for Rangers in Europe this season. And they will have to do that without key player Souttar for their upcoming test against Ludogorets.

Huge Rangers boost for John Souttar and Danny Rohl

Earlier this month, centre-back Souttar suffered an unspecified injury. Initially, Rangers feared the 29-year-old would miss a significant chunk of the season.

However, Rohl has issued some positive news for Rangers fans before their home clash against the Bulgarian outfit in the Europa League on Thursday.

He told reporters on Wednesday: “Yeah, I think, unfortunately, John Souttar is out for this week, we got the result today, I think this is positive. We thought at the beginning it’s long term, but now it’s hopefully just until Monday, then he’s back, that gives us a lift.

Dujon [Sterling] looks good on the pitch, I’m not sure if I will use him at the weekend, because then we have a lot of games ahead, we have to manage him.”

Going by Rohl’s remarks, Souttar will miss their Scottish Premiership clash at home to Dundee on Sunday.

However, he could be back for their Europa League trip to FC Porto next Thursday (29 January). Rohl will be eyeing a first victory in Europe this season after losses to SK Brann, Roma, and Ferencvaros.

The Gers are currently fourth bottom of the Europa League table and need to win their remaining two fixtures to have any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.

Rangers set for more January transfers?

So far this month, it could be argued that the 49ers Enterprises have backed Rohl in the transfer market.

Andreas Skov Olsen has been Rangers’ statement signing after joining on loan from Wolfsburg, while Tochi Chukwuani and Tuur Rommens also arrived in January.

Oscar Cortes and Lyall Cameron have been brought in on loan, but will Rangers provide Rohl with a January war chest?

Finances in the Scottish Premiership are not nearly as plentiful as they are in the Premier League, but more quality across the park could help Rangers haul in league leaders Hearts.

Rangers currently sit third in the table, with an inferior goal difference to second-placed Celtic, while Hearts are six points clear at the summit.

They have plenty to play for this season and what they achieve could be defined by what they do over the next 10 days or so before the transfer window shuts.
