David Sullivan has failed West Ham yet again as Konstantinos Mavropanos ‘set to leave’ this summer
David Sullivan is set to have questions to answer from West Ham United fans yet again as centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos is expected to leave this summer.
The Hammers’ owner cuts a hugely controversial figure at the London Stadium, with supporters never wasting a chance to make their feelings known towards him for the way that he runs the club.
Frustration towards the club hierarchy is surely now set to mount again with the news that Mavropanos is ready to move on from the East London outfit.
The Greek defender has played a starring role in their recent upturn under Nuno Espirito Santo, and will be hugely important to their survival fight between now and the end of the campaign.
However, an exit for him is now imminent this summer, with Florian Plettenberg revealing that he is “set to leave” the capital club, with West Ham now needing to plan without him.

Konstantinos Mavropanos exit news highlights bigger issue at West Ham
Mavropanos has been a key performer for West Ham in recent weeks, as his centre-back partnership with Axel Disasi has made the team significantly tougher to beat of late.
The recruitment team are already keen to try and tie the latter down to a permanent deal in the summer, and that would likely have had Nuno already planning for that to be his starting pairing again for next term.
Stats Mavropanos Total Squad Rank Apps (Starts) 25 (21) N/A G/A 3 9th Defensive Contributions per 90 11.2 2nd Tackles per 90 1.5 =8th Interceptions per 90 1.7 2nd Blocks per 90 1 2nd
However, that will no longer be the case with Mavropanos “seeking a new challenge” at the end of next season, and clubs in both the Bundesliga and the Premier League chasing him.
The 28-year-old still has two years remaining on his contract at the London Stadium, but he is clearly keen to get out of West Ham even if they stay up, which is a damning reflection on the culture of the club.
They have stagnated under Sullivan’s guidance in recent years, and keeping hold of their best players has been a major difficulty at times.
Mavropanos’ desire to move away is yet another indicator that there is a lack of belief among the squad that the club can match their goals long-term, which has to fall at the owner’s door, and it is hard to shake the feeling that he has failed the fans yet again.
West Ham must spend Mavropanos profit wisely
West Ham signed Mavropanos from Stuttgart for around £15million back in 2023, and Plettenberg has already revealed that they are set to make a sizeable profit from his sale this summer.
Money in the bank is all well and good for the Hammers, but if they are to truly cover for the loss, then it is vital that they spend those funds wisely.
They are likely now looking at a rebuild of the centre of their defence, even if they stay up, which places even greater emphasis on them getting their next signing right.
West Ham’s recruitment has left a lot to be desired in recent years, and the club hierarchy could go a long way to getting the fans back on side by committing a significant amount of money to find a top-quality replacement.
