Everton eye 33-yr-old striker who is in talks to become a free agent - report

West Ham forward Callum Wilson could be the man to end Everton’s striker dilemma.

David Moyes has not been able to rely on Thierno Barry or Beto to lead the line at the Hill Dickinson Stadium this season.

Both forwards have three goals in all competitions, with the former having the edge when it comes to strikes in the Premier League, as the graphic below highlights.

Everton are in the market for attacking reinforcements, and Wilson is apparently somebody who they are looking at.

Everton could pounce as Callum Wilson exit on the cards at West Ham

Everton have been linked with Fenerbahce forward Youssef En-Nesyri, but that deal may not be as advanced as was first thought.

Several sources had shared that the Blues were in talks over a loan-to-buy deal, but a report from The Athletic on 14 January states that interest is not at an advanced stage.

Their sources claimed that the Toffees are interested in 33-year-old Wilson, who is in talks to cancel his contract with the Hammers and become a free agent.

Would Wilson be the right man for Everton?

Wilson has a wealth of experience in the English top-flight, with 92 goals and 26 assists in 256 appearances.

The evidence from this season, though, suggests that he would not be the right man for the job.

In his short stint with the London Stadium outfit, he has notched four goals and one assist in 17 matches for the Irons.

While that is more than Beto and Barry have managed, it is hardly an inspiring signing for the Blues and would likely not solve their issues.

Wilson is highly injury-prone and cannot be relied upon regularly, as he has missed 114 matches in the last six seasons for club and country.

There are not many top-class strikers on the market right now, but signing an ageing veteran, who has the fitness record that Wilson has, is not the answer.

It would be a convenient signing, given the lack of a fee, but it would still not be worth the Toffees’ while, and the fact that the relegation-threatened side are willing to let him walk away should tell Everton exactly what they need to know.
