Everton fire brutal Chelsea and Rosenior dig after Hill Dickinson win

Everton fired a brutal social media dig at Chelsea after their 3-0 win on Saturday.

David Moyes’ side came out on top and put a marker down in their hunt for European football next season.

The Blues are now eighth in the Premier League just two points behind Liam Rosenior’s side after the Hill Dickinson Stadium contest on 21 March.

Everton mocked Chelsea and Rosenior after the game by posting an image of Jake O’Brien holding the ball, with the caption: “Respecting the ball.”

What was Everton’s dig in reference to?

Everton’s dig at their opposition was in reference to Rosenior’s comments after the 1-0 loss to Newcastle on 14 March.

The Stamford Bridge side had been slammed after referee Paul Tierney was caught up in their pre-match huddle at St James’ Park.

Rosenior had claimed that they were respecting the ball and were showing unity and togetherness with the gesture.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, he said: “My players made the decision that they wanted to be around the ball, to respect the ball and show unity and leadership.”

Why Everton vs Chelsea meant so much

Everton’s victory will be even more satisfying after the recent news about Chelsea’s fine from the Premier League.

The West London side were handed a £10.75million fine and a suspended transfer ban for £47.5m worth of secret agent-related payments between 2011 and 2018.

Many Toffees supporters have seen the penalty as lenient, with their club given points deductions totalling eight points after their own financial indiscretions, when they breached Profit and Sustainability rules in 2024.

The sanctions are viewed as a slap on the wrist, given that the SW6 side have owners even more wealthy than the Blues, and that was used as justification for those sanctions.

Therefore, the three points will be more than just bragging rights for many supporters, given the rightful uproar over the punishment.

More importantly, it puts Moyes’ side in a brilliant position when it comes to their chase of a European berth in the next campaign.

The social media dig will put a laugh on Evertonians’ faces, but the three points and their club’s league position will be most satisfying outcome from the game, due to what it means.

It is a testament to the work done by the Friedkin Group that the Merseysiders are in this position already, now they must capitalise and secure continental football.
