Everton owner Dan Friedkin loses to Chelsea chief in £2.8billion race - report

Everton chairman Dan Friedkin has failed to secure a stake in another sports franchise.

The American investor came to Merseyside to take over from the failing Farhad Moshiri back in December 2024.

He became the majority owner with a 99.5 per cent share to add the Toffees to his already existing football resume.

The 61-year-old already holds a majority stake in Italian giants Roma, something which he has had since late 2019.

Friedkin has done good work at Everton and wanted to add a baseball side to his roster, but has been gazumped by Chelsea-linked Jose Feliciano.

Dan Friedkin misses out on San Diego Padres acquisition

The Blues owner has certainly helped to turn things around on Merseyside, with a move to Hill Dickinson Stadium just a part of that.

He has managed that despite having ties to both the Toffees and Roma, with both looking to progress in their own lanes.

Friedkin has continued to try and add to his portfolio with reports in March 2025 suggesting that he met with the NHL about a potential expansion team in Houston.

Since then, the American has attempted to land a deal for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball.

The Wall Street Journal has now reported that Clearlake co-founder Feliciano has beaten him to the punch.

The global investment firm owns Chelsea, and now the Puerto Rican businessman and his wife look set to land the MLB franchise for around £2.8billion.

Friedkin has recently been praised at Everton, and there will now be hope that he can focus on the Merseyside outfit rather than further investments.

How could the San Diego Padres miss impact of Everton?

There will be a concern from many supporters on Merseyside that their owner is looking to invest so much elsewhere.

A deal in the £2.8bn range is obviously a sizable potential investment, but reports suggest he is worth a figure in the region of £9bn.

He also continues to do excellent work with Everton, even while having ties with Roma and his eye on other franchises.

The Toffees faithful shouldn’t be concerned, even now that Friedkin has missed out on taking charge of the San Diego Padres.
