Everton to use player who started vs Aston Villa as makeweight for new signing - report

David Moyes looks set to finally get his long-awaited right-back signing.

It’s been no secret that Everton have been looking to sign a right-back in this winter window, with Moyes identifying that position as a weak spot in his side.

Nathan Patterson has been strongly linked with an Everton exit this month, after failing to convince Moyes that he was a viable long-term starter.

Patterson started against Aston Villa at the weekend, helping the Toffees to an impressive clean sheet.

No new signings have arrived at Hill Dickinson Stadium in any position so far this winter, with the Friedkin Group planning a £70million summer war chest to fund a major rebuild.

So, with Patterson seemingly having no future at Everton, Toffees hierarchy are evidently keen to get the 24-year-old Scotsman off the books.

However, finding a dance partner has proven difficult, as his five appearances in all competitions this season has limited his chance to put himself in the shop window.

Everton are suggested to value Patterson at around £6m, and Spanish side Sevilla have been one of the clubs linked with his signature.

And, in a fresh update from Vamos Mi Sevilla on Wednesday, it is reported that Everton have firmed up their interest in Sevilla right-back Juanlu Sanchez.

It’s stated that selling the 22-year-old defender would be important to the club’s fundraising efforts, and that because he’s a homegrown talent of their academy, it would register as a pure-profit sale.

The report claims that Patterson would move in the opposite direction on loan as part of the agreement, with the “significant” transfer fee involved being around £13m.

Everton tried to sign Sanchez in the 2025 winter transfer window, in what was a proposed loan with the view to a permanent deal, but it was rejected by Sevilla.

Why Sanchez would be an excellent signing for Everton

Having been capped by Spain at Under-23, 21, 19 and Under-17 levels, Sanchez is evidently a young full-back with plenty of ability and potential.

At just 22, he’s still very much at the start of his senior career, and already has just shy of 100 first-team appearances for Sevilla under his belt.

He’s having a slight down year so far in 2025-26 with just one assist to his name, which is a notable drop-off compared to last season, where he scored five goals and provide five assists in 35 games.

But, that production level shows that there’s a very good player in there, and showcases his attacking quality that he could bring to Everton.

Therefore, he looks every bit of a player that could really develop into a top right-back in the Premier League, as well as appearing to have every chance of becoming a full Spanish international.
