Everything we know about Riccardo Calafiori’s contract situation as Arsenal star suffers new injury blow
Riccardo Calafiori has often split opinion at Arsenal due to the talented full-back’s issues when staying fully fit.
The Italian international missed several matches during December and January, with Mikel Arteta having to trust Myles Lewis-Skelly and Piero Hincapie to fill the position instead.
Calafiori had only started one of the Gunners’ last six Premier League matches, but having been given the nod against Mansfield Town in the FA Cup, supporters were excited to see him back.
He looked comfortable until going down holding his hamstring in the 76th minute, being replaced by Jaden Dixon. Having been linked with an exit before, Arsenal’s transfer plans may now change.

What are the terms of Riccardo Calafiori’s contract?
Arteta’s side signed Calafiori from Bologna in the summer of 2024, investing a fee of up to £42million, including add-ons, in the left-back, who has since made 56 appearances.
As already stated, the defender splits opinion in North London, with many supporters believing that his inconsistencies when it comes to staying fit are a major negative about having him in the squad.
With four goals and five assists since arriving, Calafiori is also a threat in the attacking third, adding another dimension to the Gunners’ style of play, but some are not convinced enough.
While there have been links between him and an exit, really ever since his arrival, Calafiori penned his deal until the summer of 2029, so it could take a sizeable fee to prize him away.
And as per reports, the defender earns around £120,000 per year, more than the likes of David Raya and Jurrien Timber, totalling a yearly average of over £6million.
What has Mikel Arteta said about Calafiori’s new injury?
Leandro Trossard also sustained an injury at the One Call Stadium, being replaced by Hincapie after just 38 minutes, and Arteta refused to release too much information on the duo.
In his post-match press conference, the Arsenal boss said, “Both of them had little niggles, they weren’t comfortable continuing. We knew this could be a possibility, especially in the conditions we were playing in today. We had to take them off.”
It was certainly not the most ideal situation, given that the Gunners are battling away in multiple competitions, but Arteta has more than enough talent in the squad to contend with injuries.
Mick Brown revealed to Football Insider last month that Arsenal plan to “get rid” of Calafiori, and those plans may be accelerated after yet another concerning injury.
