Ex-PGMOL chief makes his feelings clear over Ramsey red card vs Man United after analysing footage

Newcastle United claimed a shock 2-1 victory over Manchester United on Thursday, despite being down to 10 players.

William Osula came off the bench to net a winner in added time for the Magpies at St James’ Park in a match full of controversy.

The most contentious moment arguably came late in the first half when Jacob Ramsey was sent off for simulation.

Ramsey has struggled for Newcastle since his summer move, and this looked to just be another poor moment for the midfielder. However, after reviewing the footage, Keith Hackett believes the officials got it wrong.

Keith Hackett: Jacob Ramsey should not have been sent off vs Man United

Late in the first half, Ramsay burst into the box on the ball before falling to the ground after Senne Lammens came out.

No contact was made between the Newcastle star and the Man United keeper, which resulted in VAR advising Banks to give Ramsey a second yellow card for simulation.

However, the midfielder did not appeal for a penalty, with many claiming that he did not dive at all, and he simply just fell over in the box.

Re-watching the footage, Hackett agrees with his sentiment, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Ramsey should not have been sent off for the incident.

He said: “I do not believe that the Newcastle United player has attempted to deceive the referee to win a penalty kick.

“I look for exaggeration, and when the player hits the ground, the player immediately turns to the referee, making an appeal.

“In this situation, there is no contact by the goalkeeper, so the decision not to award a penalty kick is the correct decision.

“However, the attacker is off balance and goes to ground.

“In my opinion, his actions do not fulfil the criteria for an act of simulation, so he is very unfortunate to receive a yellow card followed by the red.

“Referee Peter Bankes has got this one wrong, making the judgment that the players act was simulation.”

Will Ramsey’s Newcastle career ever take off?

Throughout the season, Hackett has exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle have had many wrong decisions against them, and this one could prove to be the most costly.

While it did not cost them on the field, it could do detrimental damage to Ramsey’s confidence.

The midfielder looked to be finally coming to life in recent weeks after he netted in the 3-2 defeat to Everton.

Now, after the red card, it remains to be seen if Ramsey will be able to bounce back quickly after he serves his suspension.

If not, it will be a huge blow for Eddie Howe, as he may never see the best of the midfielder.
