Ex-refs chief: Dan Burn deserved to be banned as Liverpool vs Newcastle footage re-analysed

Dan Burn was fortunate not to be sent off during Newcastle United’s damning 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that Simon Hooper should have shown a red card on Saturday, 31 January.

Emotions were high on Merseyside, with Anthony Gordon and Alexis Mac Allister clashing early on before the former opened the scoring in the 36th minute.

However, thanks to a Hugo Ekitike brace and goals from Florian Wirtz and Ibrahima Konate, Arne Slot‘s side managed to turn the game around, and it could have gotten even better for the Reds.

Burn has only recently returned from injury for Newcastle, and it was the England international who could have been shown his marching orders following a late challenge on Cody Gakpo.

Simon Hooper should have sent Dan Burn off at Anfield

Already carded in the 86th minute for dissent, just two minutes later, the 33-year-old flew into a challenge on Liverpool‘s No.18, infuriating the attacker’s teammates in the closing stages.

Gakpo had to be held back, with Milos Kerkez also having a go at the defender, and Hackett believes that Eddie Howe was lucky not to see his team go down to 10 men at Anfield.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the incident, the former referee said: “The challenge by Dan Burn was reckless and should have resulted in him receiving a yellow card sanction.

“This should have been followed by a red card, given that earlier in the game, he was cautioned with a yellow card.”

Newcastle United star follows in the footsteps of Jean-Clair Todibo

The weekend treated us to some incredible Premier League matches, with Beto scoring a late equaliser against Brighton, Arsenal thrashing Leeds United, and Chelsea completing a dramatic comeback.

And at Stamford Bridge, Jean-Clair Todibo saw red in a moment of madness, as West Ham threw away a two-goal lead away from home, leaving them five points from safety.

With Nottingham Forest facing Crystal Palace on Sunday, 1 February, there is every chance that the Hammers could fall eight points behind, so it is understandable why emotions would bubble over.

Burn was fortunate not to join West Ham’s No.25 on the sidelines for the next game, and Slot is likely to have words with Howard Webb over the situation.
