Ex-refs chief makes feelings clear over Liverpool penalty controversy vs Wolves after re-analysing footage

Liverpool should not have had a penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers for Ladislav Krejci’s handling of the ball during their 2-1 defeat.

This is according to Keith Hackett, who believes that the officials got the decision right.

Tuesday’s match was full of controversial moments, which ultimately led to Liverpool’s Champions League hopes taking a knock.

Multiple players, including Cody Gakpo, were slaughtered for their performances at Molineux, as they fell to a shock defeat to the club that is sat at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Keith Hackett: Thomas Bramall got Liverpool penalty claim correct

Early in the second half, while the game was still at 0-0, the visitors were hunting for an opener.

This led to Jeremie Frimpong whipping a ball into the box, which was blocked by Krejci.

However, when blocking the ball, it hit the Wolves defender’s arm, with many believing that the incident should have resulted in a penalty due to handball.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett believes that Bramall was right not to award a spot-kick, claiming that his arm was tucked into his body.

He said: “The player’s arm is tucked close into the body when the ball strikes.

“It is not handball; the match officials got this one correct.”

Where does the Wolves defeat leave Arne Slot?

According to Football Insider, Slot’s position at Liverpool will be under threat if Champions League qualification is not achieved.

In recent weeks, the Reds looked to be on the right path to achieving this, winning three consecutive games in the division before the Wolves defeat.

Now, Slot’s position looks more fragile than ever after the shock defeat, with their Champions League hopes damaged further.

If the Reds are knocked out of the FA Cup on Friday against Wolves, it could see further fans turn against the manager as they look to win at least one piece of silverware this season.

As a result, Slot may well be dismissed before the end of the campaign unless he can put a consistent run of form together in all competitions.

However, it remains to be seen if he is able to achieve this, with the magic of the last campaign well and truly gone.
