Ex-SPFL chief - Rangers have 'question marks' over Danny Rohl after Celtic collapse

Danny Rohl’s tactics have been questioned after Rangers threw away a two-goal lead against rivals Celtic in the Glasgow derby.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, as the dropped points could prove pivotal in the Scottish Premiership title race.

Rangers remain six points behind league leaders Hearts after they looked on course to close the gap thanks to a first half Youssef Chermiti brace against Celtic.

Celtic though earned a 2-2 draw in the second half, and Rangers failed to win for the second successive league match.

Danny Rohl should have led Rangers to Celtic victory

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states scrutiny has been on Rohl for his second half substitutions.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness though believes Rohl has been able to get the best out of Chermiti.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, we said last week that Chermiti turns up for big games, and he certainly does. I mean, his record is phenomenal in big games and the Rangers fans just can’t ignore that.

“I mean, he has become their savior and the quality of that goal will be something that will be talked about by the Rangers fans for many seasons to come. There’s no doubt he’s got the raw talent.

“There’s obviously an athlete in there that can do things, and it seems to be a real confidence player. Danny Rohl seems to have got him going.

“I know there are question marks about Rohl’s second half selections and substitutions that didn’t tie up the game when they should have tied it up at 2-0 ahead.”

Rangers make summer transfer plan

Sources have told Football Insider that Rangers will sign a centre-back in the summer, with Derek Cornelius and Nasser Djiga both set to return to their parent clubs.

Emmanuel Fernandez has also been the subject of transfer interest, meaning Rohl could be short of options in the position.

Rangers will want to make a faster start to next season in order to boost their title hopes, and any European campaign could see the Gers begin competitive matches in July.
