Exclusive: Barnsley agree deal to sign Middlesbrough rising star

Barnsley have agreed a deal to sign Middlesbrough winger Charlie Lennon in a permanent move, sources have told Football Insider.

Lennon, 19, spent the first half of the season on loan at Darlington, but is now set to make the switch to League One after his parent club accepted a bid from the Tykes.

The youngster notched two goals across 19 appearances for Darlington in all competitions, and had recently extended his loan at the National League North outfit for another month.

However, Barnsley could now put paid to the remainder of that deal after settling on an agreement of their own.

Barnsley eyeing busy January window

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday that goalkeeper Owen Goodman was undergoing a medical at Barnsley ahead of a loan move from Crystal Palace, and Conor Hourihane is now set to get another addition to his squad in Lennon.

The South Yorkshire outfit are currently sitting 17th in League One, a far cry from the lofty ambitions that they set for themselves at the start of the season.

However, with centre-back Eoghan O’Connell already through the door and movement taking place regarding several other deals, they will undoubtedly have their eye on a push for the play-offs in the second half of the season.

League One has become extremely congested in the middle of the table once again, and Hourihane and Co. will be hoping that the reinforcements that they land this winter can be the catalyst to string together a strong run of form that pushes them into play-off contention.

However, Lennon has made just one EFL appearance so far in his career, and is likely to be a signing made with the future in mind, rather than the expectation that he will have an immediate impact.

Davis Keillor-Dunn attracting Championship interest

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday that Barnsley star Davis Keillor-Dunn had several Championship scouts watching him during the FA Cup clash with Liverpool on Monday.

Blackburn Rovers, Preston and Middlesbrough all sent representatives to assess the 28-year-old’s performance, as they watched his side slip to a 4-1 defeat against their Premier League hosts.

Keillor-Dunn has been a key figure for Barnsley once again this season, and he is their top goalscorer with 11 league goals to his name already.

However, from like that was always likely to attract interest, and clubs from the Championship are now beginning to circle around him.

Barnsley’s business in terms of incomings is certainly a positive sign, but to lose their star man would be a major blow.
