Exclusive: Man United are well placed to land extra £29m

Manchester United are on course to land more than £29million in extra prize money following their recent upturn in performances, sources have told Football Insider.

Man United are in a strong run of form under Michael Carrick, who has claimed six wins from his seven matches in charge since replacing Ruben Amorim in January.

The Manchester giants finished 15th in the Premier League table last season, earning them £136.2m in prize money.

The Old Trafford club moved up to third following their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday (1 March), with Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Sesko turning the game on its head following Maxence Lacroix’s early opener.

Manchester City earned £165.5m in prize money for finishing third last season, meaning Man United are in line to land an extra £29.3m if they can consolidate their current position in the table.

How Champions League qualification could impact Man United

Man United are able to focus purely on the Premier League after already being dumped out of the domestic cups this season.

The 20-time English champions were beaten by Grimsby Town on penalties in the second round of the Carabao Cup, while Brighton knocked them out of the FA Cup in the third round.

There has been no European football played at Old Trafford this season following the 15th-place finish and Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in 2024-25.

Securing a return to the Champions League over the next couple of months would provide Man United’s financial situation with a significant boost.

The prize money on offer in the elite European competition is far greater than the Europa League, while there is also an opportunity to boost the matchday revenue at Old Trafford.

Why Michael Carrick is ‘overhelming favourite’ to land Man United job

It is understood Champions League qualification is the minimum requirement for Carrick as he looks to land the Man United job on a permanent basis.

The 44-year-old was appointed until the end of the season following Amorim’s dismissal two months ago.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (2 March) Man United have added Niko Kovac to their shortlist as they consider their managerial options.

However, Carrick is believed to be the “overwhelming favourite” following his impressive start to life back at Old Trafford.

Man United’s next fixture sees them take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Wednesday (4 March).
