Exclusive: Man United officials in talks to bring Mason Greenwood back to Old Trafford as clause revealed

Man United officials have internally discussed the idea of bringing Mason Greenwood back to the club, sources have told Football Insider.

The Red Devils included a buy-back clause when they sold the 24-year-old right winger to Marseille in the summer of 2024, where they can sign the attacker for a knockdown fee less than his worth in the current market.

Greenwood has impressed during his time at Marseille and has scored over 40 goals in his first two seasons in the South of France.

How good has Mason Greenwood been for Marseille?

Greenwood has been one of the best performers in Ligue 1 since his move to France.

To date, he has netted 42 goals in 63 appearances in all competitions for Marseille, as well as picked up 12 assists.

This has seen him win three separate Ligue 1 Player of the Month Awards, as well as finish as the league’s joint-top scorer in the 2024-25 campaign.

Greenwood’s form has even helped guide the French side into the Champions League, with Marseille taking on Liverpool on Wednesday as they lost 3-0.

His form has seen calls for Thomas Tuchel to recall Greenwood to the England squad, with the attacker previously earning a sole cap for the Three Lions in 2020.

As a result, the right winger has clearly continued his form since leaving Getafe, which earned him the move to Marseille.

What are Man United’s plan for the rest of January?

If Man United do re-sign Greenwood, the Old Trafford faithful should not expect further business this window.

The Red Devils are yet to bring in a new face this month, with their plans no doubt impacted by the departure of Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick’s arrival as caretaker manager.

Football Insider recently revealed that Man United are expected to do little to no business in the winter window, as they look to keep hold of their funds ready for the summer.

Instead, the Red Devils are expected to be boosted by their returning stars from AFCON, with the tournament now over.

However, it remains to be seen if they are willing to splash the cash in the remaining days before deadline day, with potential Champions League qualification on the line this campaign.
