Expert: Arsenal ‘can agree’ Alvarez deal as Chelsea hit by ‘serious’ budget crisis

Arsenal could be a possible destination for Julian Alvarez in the summer amid doubts whether Chelsea could afford to sign the forward.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Alvarez will remain at Atletico Madrid for another season.

Alvarez has been linked with a return to the Premier League having spent two years at Man City before moving to Spain in 2024.

The 26-year-old could cost more than £80million to sign, with Atletico Madrid determined to keep the forward at the club.

Arsenal are interested in signing Alvarez, with Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus possibly departing the Emirates in the summer.

‘Positive noises’ around Julian Alvarez’s future

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – rules out Arsenal and Chelsea signing Alvarez.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes only Premier League clubs may be able to afford to sign the Argentine.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think the only clubs would normally be in the Premier League to do it, but as we just pointed out, I think Chelsea’s another example where they’re going to have some serious budgeting issues coming up.

“So I’m going to actually rule out Arsenal and Chelsea for Alvarez coming back. I think the money is on Alvarez staying at Atletico right now.

“There’s been a lot of positive noises coming out of Atletico about that. He’s got a long time left on his contract, so I think he’s going to be staying down there.”

Arsenal put star trio up for sale

Wyness told Football Insider that Arsenal would listen to offers on Odegaard, Martinelli and Myles Lewis-Skelly in the summer.

The Gunners may need to sell a star player before they can buy in the market, with Mikel Arteta having spent over £900million since he took charge of the club.

Arsenal’s end to the campaign could also determine their transfer plans, with Arteta’s side still in with a chance of winning all four major trophies this season.
