Ibrox View: Cavenagh plays a blinder amid latest Rangers transfer goings-on

Andrew Cavenagh has had a turbulent spell as the chairman of Rangers.

Cavenagh continuously backed Russell Martin at the start of the season and was eventually forced to sack him after just 123 days in charge.

Fans were turning against the 49ers during Martin’s disastrous reign, but the appointment of Danny Rohl has seen a dramatic change in fortunes.

Although Cavenagh has been under pressure from Rangers supporters, the improved results on the pitch have lifted the mood around Ibrox.

With the winter transfer window open for a few more days, it seems as though Cavenagh is overseeing an impressive month of recruitment so far.

It’s not just about bringing players in, and Rangers have made it clear that they refuse to sell any of their valuable players due to their position in the title race.

It emerged on Tuesday that Rangers rejected a £10m bid for Djeidi Gassama from French side Monaco.

Youssef Chermiti was also subjected to a £13m offer from Fenerbahce, but Rohl views the striker as a key part of his plans, particularly after his brace against Celtic on 3 January.

Accepting both deals would have aligned with the player trading model perfectly, but Cavenagh is looking to stray away from that.

Emmanuel Fernandez is attracting interest from across Europe, having already been scouted by Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund.

Regardless of the fact that some fans would happily sell Chermiti or Gassama for a profit, it shows that Rangers are ensuring they have every key player at their disposal for the rest of the season.

It seemed implausible for Cavenagh to get back on track after Martin’s spell in charge, but he is finally getting it right in Govan.

Indeed, it is fair to say Cavenagh has played a blinder with his approach to Rangers’ winter transfer activity so far.

Andrew Cavenagh needs to maintain his current philosophy

The Bears have previously been known for selling key players after experiencing domestic success.

They were able to make a profit on Calvin Bassey, Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara after winning the Scottish Premiership in 2020-21.

Although rejecting extravagant fees for the likes of Gassama and Chermiti is certainly bold, it’s definitely a statement of intent.

Rohl undoubtedly has a big say in the recruitment process, and it’s clear that he is aligned with how the 49ers want to run the club.

If Rangers can win some silverware this season, not only can they make even more profit on certain players, but they should be better equipped to deal with European football due to the quality of their squad.
