Ibrox View: James Tavernier's best Rangers moments ranked as contract expiry gets closer

James Tavernier looks increasingly likely to leave Rangers at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old has just over a month of his contract left, and it does not look like he will sign a new deal to remain at Ibrox.

The Daily Record claimed on 28 February that there had been “no hint of contract talks” between the two parties.

He has been a fantastic servant and does not have the accolades to show that, necessarily, with the Gers being up and down in his time with them.

Ibrox News takes a look at Tavernier’s best moments in his Rangers career, as his deal is set to wind down.

🚨 RANGERS TRANSFER UPDATE 🚨

The latest breaking news on signings, departures, and Danny Röhl’s primary targets.

5.) Free-kick on Rangers debut vs Hibernian

Tavernier is synonymous with Rangers now, but he made a stunning impression on supporters on his debut.

It was a 6–2 win in the Scottish Challenge Cup clash with Hibernian at Easter Road that showed Gers supporters what he was all about.

He struck a brilliant free-kick past Mark Oxley.

2.) Tavernier steps up in Scottish League Cup win

The defender was key as the Gers won the League Cup in 2023, as he notched the winner in the final.

He swept the ball home in the 76th minute to score the only goal of the contest as Philippe Clement’s side lifted the only trophy of his reign.

It was typical of the former Wigan Athletic man.

3.) Reaches 100 league goals for Rangers

Tavernier reached 100 league goals for the Gers in the 3-0 win over Dundee in January.

He fired home from the penalty spot to open the scoring and the floodgates for his side.

Speaking to Rangers TV about the achievement, he said: “Personally, it is a proud moment to reach that milestone in the league.

“But it couldn’t have done it without all the players I have played with, so it is a big thanks to them.

“I think Nico should have scored the goal, but we got the penalty that I put away, so 100 goals, I will look back on it when I hang up the boots and appreciate it.”

2.) Europa League strike vs Leipzig

The veteran played a key part in the Gers’ run to the Europa League final in the 2021-22 season, scoring in the knockout rounds against Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

The latter was particularly important as it was the first goal in a historic comeback after the Light Blues had lost the first leg in Germany by a 1-0 scoreline.

They would end up winning 3-1 on the night at Ibrox, and 3-2 on aggregate, with Tavernier’s finish at the back post the pivotal moment.

1.) Lifting the league title as unbeaten centurions

There could be nothing else in first place, could there?

Tavernier captained the Gers to the league title in the 2020-21 season, as they finished unbeaten on 102 points, under Steven Gerrard.

The centurions will forever go down in Gers history, and the Englishman played a key part, notching 12 goals and 10 assists in the division.

Why the best may be still to come

The best could still be yet to come, as Tavernier could end up lifting the title once more.

It would be right up there with all of his achievements, due to the position that the Gers were in when Russell Martin was sacked.

The Bears were 16 points off Hearts, but are now just one point behind them with five games left to play.
