Ibrox View: Rangers' called-up int'l star will bang on Rohl's door this summer, but it may not be opened

Findlay Curtis deserved his call-up to the Scottish national team, but it would have never happened had he stayed with Rangers beyond January.

The on-loan Kilmarnock star has been dazzling under the management of Neil McCann, as it was announced this week that Steve Clarke included him in Scotland’s squad for the upcoming international games.

But it was clear that the winger never had a place at Ibrox under Danny Rohl, despite impressing during the lacklustre reign of Russell Martin earlier in the campaign.

The 19-year-old is set to return to Auchenhowie in the summer, but what waits for him may worry.

Curtis’ loan move has gone well, but that may tempt the youngster to leave Rangers if conversations with Rohl don’t go as he hopes upon his return to Glasgow.

Barry Ferguson congratulated Curtis on his call-up, as many connected to the Bears believe it was well earned.

The teenager has only featured half a dozen times for Killie, but has been impressing in the dribbling and chance creation department, catching the eye of Scotland boss Clarke.

Curtis made just two starts in all competitions under Rohl, with one of which being a free pass in the 3-1 loss to Porto where he actually picked up an assist.

While you’d expect the Gers boss to play his strongest squad in matches, it’s still a mystery as to why Curtis never got more game time off the bench.

Any Scottish Premiership club would jump at the chance to sign the wide man, but at this stage in his career, he needs to start games.

Curtis could very well come back to Rangers, deserving of an important role next season, but if Rohl doesn’t change his ways, then the former could seek pastures new.

What did Rohl say about Curtis’ call-up?

Rohl has been open and honest about his decision to send Curtis on loan to Kilmarnock, and it won’t have surprised many Gers fans to see how well he’s been doing with an arm wrapped around him.

Speaking to the media ahead of Gers’ clash against Aberdeen on Saturday, the German head coach revealed his thoughts on Curtis’ call-up.

Rohl said, as quoted by STV News: “I was really happy, I sent him a message. A big congratulations to him. I think it’s a huge step.

“And for me, the plan was that he got his game minutes. He got game minutes, and now he could make the step up in the national squad.”

It just goes to show what happens when you give the youngsters a chance, and Rohl may need to reassess this summer, or he could cost the Bears a gem.
