Ibrox View: Rangers have clear proof they let Philippe Clement down after latest Norwich heroics

Rangers sacked Philippe Clement back in February 2025 after a string of poor results.

The Belgian was seen as a coup appointment at Ibrox after spells with Monaco and Club Brugge previously.

Things didn’t really work out in Govan, and he was yet another Gers head coach to sit well behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, despite a great start.

That eventually culminated in his sacking as he was replaced on an interim basis by Barry Ferguson and then permanently by Russell Martin.

Rangers eventually struck gold with Danny Rohl, but may have been in a better position down if they had kept hold of Clement.

The 52-year-old didn’t make any rash decisions when jumping back into management after being given his marching orders in G51.

He waited nine months before surprisingly taking up a role with a relegation-threatened Norwich side in the English Championship.

That marked a strange career direction for the Belgian, but his decision has been vindicated over and over again since his move.

Clement has been superb with the Canaries, and that was on show once again in a 2-1 away win at automatic promotion contenders Millwall.

Norwich came back from behind to seal a 2-1 victory as their quality, particularly defensively and on the counter, shone through at The Den.

There is evidence there to see of what he can do when given the opportunity to manage players and work to their strengths.

Clement has made his mark with Norwich, and the Ibrox outfit may not regret his exit, but it can be argued that the entire club let him down.

Rangers players and board blocked Clement from success

Revisionism is always going to happen when a manager is sacked after a terrible run and then goes on to succeed elsewhere.

That isn’t what this is.

Clement was terrible towards the end of his Govan tenure and had to go, especially after losing to Queens Park at home.

Despite that, it feels as if the players and board could have done more to make sure that his spell in charge didn’t end that way.

The new ownership in G51 has backed Rohl and helped him succeed, something which certainly would have benefited the ex-Monaco man.

That could have helped stop the dressing room from turning before ultimately showing him the door mid-way through last season.
