Ibrox View: Rangers lack of involvement in PFA Awards shortlist says it all about their failings

Rangers have been massively underrepresented in the PFA Awards shortlist.

The Gers have been much-improved under Danny Rohl and are continuing to chase the Scottish Premiership title.

That has taken a knock after Motherwell rocked up at Ibrox and sealed all three points thanks to a late Emmanuel Longelo goal.

The G51 defeat has left the Light Blues third in the table, behind Celtic and Hearts, with four games remaining.

Frustration has returned at Rangers after losing to the Steelmen, a feeling that has been echoed by their lack of involvement in the PFA Awards shortlist.

It has been a topsy-turvy season for the Govan club as things started terribly under Russell Martin, but have improved under Rohl.

The German has racked up a positive win rate since coming in, but it might not be enough to see him lift the title in mid-May.

A defeat against the Well hasn’t helped matters, but it is largely indicative of the failure of many Gers stars to maintain any sort of consistency.

The same can’t be said of Hearts, who have been stellar throughout the season and remain at the top of the Scottish Premiership table as a result.

That has seen the Scotland PFA put forward Claudio Braga and Lawrence Shankland for the Player of the Year award alongside Motherwell’s Elijah Just and Tawanda Maswanhise.

A similar theme continues into the Young Player of the Year award with Barney Stewart (Falkirk), Findlay Marshall (Arbroath) and Luke Graham (Dundee) nominated.

Mikey Moore can hold his head up high at Rangers after also being put forward for that award, as the only Ibrox squad member to be named on the shortlist.

Rohl has certainly done well to drag his side up the Scottish Premiership table, but it may prove to be too little too late.

If he wants to win the title in Govan, he needs to maintain a level of consistency that can’t feature home wins against anyone.

That lack of regular performance levels is only reinforced by the lack of names on the PFA awards shortlist.

The fact that Moore is the only Rangers player there, and even he’s on loan from Tottenham, certainly doesn’t help matters.

Unfortunately for the Gers, they’ll never win the league if their best players don’t stand tall and prove themselves as the best in the division.
