Jadon Sancho fighting to secure his Aston Villa future after superb display vs Lille

Jadon Sancho may be slowly persuading Aston Villa to sign him on a permanent deal after a rollercoaster of a temporary spell with them.

The Man United loanee has received a lot of criticism during his time at Villa Park, mainly for his lack of consistency on the pitch, but at his very best, he can be absolutely unstoppable.

It was a case of the latter on Thursday, 19 March, against Lille, with the 25-year-old helping the Villans to book a spot in the Europa League quarter-finals, beating the Ligue 1 giants 2-0 at home.

Aston Villa’s transfer plans are likely to depend on the team’s Premier League standing and how far they reach in Europe, especially if they are to afford Sancho’s wages ahead of the summer transfer window.

Although Football Insider understands that Sancho would be open to re-joining Borussia Dortmund, Villa have not yet been ruled out of the race to secure his signature at the end of the season.

Despite only grabbing one goal and two assists in 30 games for the Villans, he has shown some real bright sparks in recent weeks, clearly trying to impress ahead of decision time this summer.

Even Dion Dublin noticed a difference when he supplied an assist against Lille, highlighting the moment on BBC Radio 5 Live, saying: “You can always tell when Jadon Sancho is enjoying his football. He’s happy to work without the ball; he was happy to run 50 yards to set up John McGinn for the goal.”

Sancho latched onto Emi Martinez’s long ball over the top before rolling the ball across for John McGinn to bury Villa’s second on the night, putting everything into grabbing the assist.

Man United supporters will tell you that the winger doesn’t often put in this kind of effort, and this would suggest that Sancho loves the idea of staying at Villa Park permanently.

And that is only possible if he can persuade the hierarchy that he’s worth splashing the cash on, especially given the club’s financial issues when it comes to battling PSR pressures.

The Red Devils will be keen to get him off the books, so the transfer fee is unlikely to be an issue, but his personal demands might make all the difference once talks open over a permanent deal.

His performances in recent weeks would make fans believe that staying in the Midlands would be ideal for the player, but he may have to take a pay cut to make that happen and get his career back on track.
