Jordan Pickford was fortunate to be able to make up for his mistake as the Everton star pulled off a world-class save against Chelsea.

Enzo Fernandez had already begun to wheel away in celebration when unleashing a close-range shot at the goalkeeper, only to be thwarted by the England international’s hand at the last moment.

However, this moment only occurred thanks to an uncharacteristic error from Pickford, who pushed a corner straight into the Argentine’s path in the middle of the box.

Pickford had no choice but to throw himself at the goal-bound shot, and with Everton going on to beat Chelsea, it was clear a key moment in proceedings at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, 21 March.

Analysing the incident during the half-time break, Phil Jagielka, a former teammate of the shot-stopper, said that Pickford would have been “disappointed” by his initial error [Sky Sports Premier League].

While the commentators and fans were gushing over the save, one which left Liam Rosenior with his hands on his head, Jagielka took a much more analytical view of the footage.

While it was nowhere near as petrifying as Robert Sanchez’s early near-fatal error on Merseyside, it was still one that could have cost the Toffees a goal just before the half-time break.

This should not be seen as a dig at the 32-year-old. Absolutely not. But the goalkeeper is not invisible. He does have weaknesses, and he made up for one of them with a cat-like save in the first half.

Everton star could inadvertently be shoo-in for another award

Unsurprisingly, Pickford was awarded with February’s Save of the Month after denying Sandro Tonali in the closing stages of the Toffees’ win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

There is absolutely no denying that he continues to come up with the goods time and time again, and while this incident was of his own making, it was another incredible save to deny the Blues.

He made another one 15 minutes into the second half, frustrating Rosenior’s side even more and possibly already putting himself in line for the same award, but just a month later.

Pickford has been unfairly criticised by pundits over the last few seasons, but he finally appears to be given his flowers, emerging as one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League.
