Kieran Maguire shares if Everton can make new legal challenge after Chelsea settlement
Everton are unlikely to have any legal right to challenge the Premier League’s latest action against Chelsea.
After breaching PSR back in 2024, the Toffees were told by the Premier League that a financial penalty was not enough due to the support of a wealthy owner.
Everton were deducted eight points in total in two periods, but avoided punishment over interest payments at Bramley-Moore Dock.
Fast forward to now, and Chelsea have only been fined £10m and a suspended transfer ban for admitting £47.5m worth of secret agent-related payments between 2011 and 2018.
Despite the clear sporting advantage and even wealthier owners, they avoided points deductions.

Can Everton legally challenge Premier League ruling on Chelsea?
Maguire admitted that Everton and Nottingham Forest fans will be very unhappy, given that no sporting sanction was imposed at Stamford Bridge.
The football finance expert believes that the Chelsea fine is presumably neither a real punishment nor a deterrent surrounding the matter.
When asked if Everton or Forest had a legal right to challenge it, given their points deductions, Maguire believes that is unlikely.
It is said that the Chelsea punishment is a settlement, rather than a charge, after the issue was self-reported by the new owners at Stamford Bridge at the time.
What is Everton’s PSR position now?
Thankfully, there is no trouble on that front.
The Friedkins took out a £350million loan with JP Morgan to restructure the debt behind-the-scenes following their takeover, which had crippling interest attached and was killing the club slowly.
Following that, the Americans have transformed the Blues financially, even if it did take a handful of quieter transfer windows for it to happen.
Farhad Moshiri spent way beyond his means, not only on transfer fees, but wages too, and that led to two separate points deductions for PSR breaches.
That is not happening under the Friedkins.

With better commercial agreements and deals in place, Everton are thriving on the banks of the Mersey, and that is only going to continue under this ownership.
So, it is brilliant to see no PSR pressure after years of constant struggles, regardless of what is happening with Chelsea and the Premier League right now.
