Michael Keane and others react as ex-Everton colleague joins new club on loan

Michael Keane is now into his ninth years as an Everton player, but his future beyond this season remains uncertain.

Signed from Burnley in July 2017 for around £25million, it is fair to say Everton have got their money’s worth out of the centre-back thanks to his longevity.

However, Keane is due to be out of contract at Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer and it is unclear whether he will stay on.

Keane has showed he is deserving of a new Everton contract this season, having started 19 of Everton’s 22 Premier League matches.

While there is no immediate question mark over Keane’s future this month, other current and former Everton players have been on the move.

Michael Keane reacts as Ben Godfrey lands new club

Everton have yet to sign any new players this window, despite David Moyes clearly wanting at least one new face.

N’Golo Kante has been linked with a shock move to Everton, but it looks like Moyes’ defensive unit will remain as it is.

Keane has been serving a suspension for his sending off in Everton’s 1-1 draw against Wolves but could come straight back into the side.

The 33-year-old has had a number of defensive partners across his near decade on Merseyside, one of those being Ben Godfrey.

Godfrey himself spent four years at Goodison Park prior to joining Atalanta in 2024, where the move has not worked out at all.

Indeed, Godfrey was loaned to Ipswich Town and then Sheffield United last season, while he is now on the move again.

Godfrey’s loan switch to Brondby was confirmed on Tuesday, with the 28-year-old taking to social media to talk of his delight in joining the Danish side.

And Keane was quick to ‘like’ the post on Instagram, along with the likes of former Everton colleagues Joao Virginia and Demarai Gray.

Everton may have perfect Michael Keane replacement lined up

Everton will need to make bringing in a new centre-back a priority should Keane not stay on beyond this summer.

That is not even accounting for any interest in Jarrad Branthwaite that resurfaces once he is finally back on the field.

Talk has recently emerged of Estoril centre-back Kevin Boma being of interest to Everton, and it may well be he is the perfect replacement for Keane.

Boma is strong from set-pieces and a real presence at the back, despite still being relatively young at 23.

Household names will also be linked with Everton over the coming months, but it may well be that bringing in a talented player from overseas makes more sense.
