'Newcastle are starting to lose patience' - Brown shares what he knows about Eddie Howe sack situation
Newcastle United are losing patience with Eddie Howe following a disastrous week for them both in the Champions League and Premier League.
Howe’s side lost 2-1 to Sunderland at the weekend, meaning their rivals have now done the double in the Tyne-Wear Derby, while they have dropped to 12th in the league.
This came shortly following their 7-2 humbling against Barcelona which saw them eliminated from the Champions League despite a strong showing in the first leg.
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle’s struggles have added to the calls for Howe’s dismissal after a miserable season.
The Magpies are performing well below their pre-season aims of securing European football, and Newcastle could soon look for a new manager as a result.

Eddie Howe facing renewed Newcastle sack pressure
Brown told Football Insider on 2 March that Newcastle are unlikely to sack Howe in the immediate future but have concerns about their lack of progress this season.
Elimination from the Champions League followed by another defeat against their bitter rivals has done no favours for the boss in terms of the pressure on his position.
Eddie Howe Premier League Record 2025-26 Games 31 Wins 12 Draws 6 Losses 13 Goals For 44 Goals Against 45 Goal Difference -1
Large sections of the fanbase at St James’ Park are now asking questions about Howe’s role, and those concerns are echoed by the club behind the scenes.
“Newcastle’s results have not been good enough this season,” Brown told Football Insider.
“There’s definitely a lot of pressure on Eddie Howe and Newcastle are starting to lose patience, because they can’t seem to find any consistency.
“They’ve been capable of picking up big results, beating the likes of Man United and Chelsea recently, but they’ve been unable to build on that.
“Losing at home to Sunderland is never going to go down well as the Newcastle manager.
“It’s easy to get caught up in results, positive or negative, but they’ve been so inconsistent this season you never know what you’re going to get from them.
“That’s not a positive sign for Eddie Howe because his teams have always been consistent, especially at home, and that’s not happening any more.
“It’s definitely going to be a concern, and there are more reason than just the manager, but ultimately the blame falls on him and whoever the manager is he will be under the cosh.”
Newcastle to miss out on transfer target after recent form
Alongside the pressure on Howe, another consequence of Newcastle’s recent form is that they look set to miss out on Champions League or even European football next year.
This will come as a blow both financially and to their ability to attract players, who will be lured to rival clubs who can offer them the opportunity to play in Europe.

Football Insider revealed on 22 March that Liverpool are leading Newcastle for AZ’s Kees Smit as the Magpies are unlikely to be able to offer the same incentives.
Should Smit opt to leave his boyhood club this summer, the Magpies are expected to be far down the pecking order of clubs, despite their long-term interest.
The likes of Barcelona and Arsenal have also been heavily linked with the newly-called-up Netherlands international, and Newcastle may be fighting a losing battle.
