Newcastle: Glenn Hoddle left staggered after Lamine Yamal miss in Barcelona clash: ‘Oh my word…’
Newcastle United were dismantled by Barcelona as they fell to a 7-2 defeat away at the Camp Nou on Wednesday.
The Magpies turned in a spirited display to secure a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Champions League Last 16 tie at St James’ Park, but things quickly unravelled for them in the second leg as they fell to a heavy defeat.
Anthony Elanga’s first-half brace ultimately counted for little as Hansi Flick’s hosts ran riot, with goals coming from five different scorers, including doubles from Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.
It was a remarkable night in the Champions League, as Barcelona ran riot to set up a quarter-final against either Atletico Madrid or Tottenham.
Newcastle face Sunderland in a huge Premier League derby this weekend, and Eddie Howe and his men will be keen to erase the memories of their trip to Spain as quickly as possible.

Glenn Hoddle couldn’t believe Lamine Yamal miss
Teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal ended the night with a goal and an assist to his name, and his penalty during first-half stoppage time opened the floodgates for his team, after he had put them 3-2 ahead.
However, the forward could have easily got his name on the scoresheet just minutes before that, as he squandered a golden opportunity to find the back of the net from six yards out.
Raphinha’s goalbound shot was parried back out into a dangerous area by Magpies goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, and Lewandowski was unable to latch onto the rebound.

The loose ball eventually fell to Yamal on the edge of the six-yard box, but the starlet blasted his right-footed effort over the crossbar in eye-catching fashion.
It was a moment that left Glenn Hoddle staggered during his co-commentary of the game on TNT Sports, as he pointed out that it would have been easier for the youngster to find the back of the net than miss in that position.
“Yamal was fantastic on the halfway line,” Hoddle said during his analysis of the chance.
“His backheel worked and he opened the play up. It’s a really good save from Ramsdale, and it’s on his (Yamal’s) right foot. It’s nicely cushioned, and oh my word, he leans back on it.
“It looked easier to miss.”
Harvey Barnes excellent in Newcastle defeat
Football Insider rated the performances of every Newcastle player in their defeat to Barcelona, and Harvey Barnes came out as the Magpies’ strongest performer at the end of the 90 minutes.
The wideman set up Elanga’s second goal with a hugely inviting cross, and he was a thorn in the side of the hosts’ defence throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Almost everything good from Newcastle went through the 28-year-old on the left flank, as his team threatened to spring a surprise on the Spanish giants in the first half.
Barnes was quietened down in the second period, as were Newcastle as a team, while their hosts ran riot.
Nevertheless, that did little to detract from what was an impressive performance from the winger, as he rounded off his excellent individual campaign in the Champions League.
