Newcastle hero sends special message to Yoane Wissa after first goal for the club vs Fulham
Newcastle hero Papiss Cisse has endorsed Yoane Wissa with a message on social media after he scored his first goal for the club against Fulham in the Carabao Cup.
It has certainly not been plain sailing for Wissa since he joined Newcastle from Brentford in the summer, but things are looking up now that he is back to full fitness.
Wissa suffered a serious knee injury on international duty just after joining the club, and suffered numerous setbacks in his recovery, meaning he had to wait until 6 December to make his debut against Burnley.
Eddie Howe handed him his first start for the club against Fulham on Wednesday night, and Wissa repaid his faith by netting his maiden Magpies strike as they emerged 2-1 victors at St James’ Park.
The DR Congo international will now be looking to kick on and force his way into Howe’s side regularly, with former Newcastle star Cisse backing him to become a hero in his own right.
Cisse supports Wissa on Instagram after maiden Newcastle strike
Cisse scored 44 goals in 131 appearances for Newcastle between 2012 and 2016 as he fired them to consistent top-half finishes and European football.
The Senegal international was one of the club’s key players across that period, as he donned the famous number nine once worn by Alan Shearer.
Wissa took to Instagram on Thursday following his first Newcastle goal with a post of him celebrating alongside the message: “HOWAY THE LADS!”
He is the latest Magpies striker to wear the number nine shirt, and Cisse endorsed him with a reply to his post that said: “The new 9” with red heart, fire and clapping emojis.
Who else has worn the number nine at Newcastle?
The aforementioned Shearer is the best player in Newcastle’s history, and the number nine shirt was his between 1996 and 2006, as he scored 206 goals in 405 appearances.
Other icons before him such as Malcolm Macdonald, Jackie Milburn and Hughie Gallacher are also fondly remembered, while those that came after him, like Cisse and Andy Carroll, also impacted the club in a positive way.

More recently, Joelinton actually donned the famous number nine as he arrived as a forward from Hoffenheim in 2019, but his switch to central midfield saw him take the number seven shirt in 2021 instead.
His vacation of the number allowed Callum Wilson to take it, and he certainly did it justice between 2021 and 2025, with 49 goals in 130 appearances.
Wilson left Newcastle at the end of his contract in the summer and joined West Ham, with Wissa now taking on the mantle of the club’s new number nine.
