Newcastle United have to cut their losses on Yoane Wissa as £15m valuation emerges

Newcastle United are considering the idea of selling striker Yoane Wissa this summer, just one year after they shelled out £55million to sign him.

The former Brentford man was signed with the intention of helping to take the Magpies to the next level and consistently challenge the Premier League’s elite, but he has endured a nightmare debut campaign at St James’ Park.

The DR Congo international has looked a shadow of the player who notched 19 league goals for Brentford last term, and there has been little to suggest that a return to that form is just around the corner.

Wissa’s struggles in the North East have backed his new club into a corner somewhat regarding his future, but with his value plummeting, it is surely now time for Eddie Howe and Co. to accept defeat.

Newcastle intend to strenthen their squad again this summer, but expensive incomings will be reliant upon players heading out in the other direction.

Newcastle ready to consider Yoane Wissa offers

Wissa’s lack of impact on Tyneside has been a huge source of frustration for the Newcastle faithful, who have been increasingly critical towards last summer’s transfer business as the season has worn on.

The Magpies’ £55m investment has bought them just one Premier League goal so far, and the frontman has performed so badly that his debut campaign for Newcastle could now become his last.

The Geordies are prepared to “consider” offers for the 29-year-old this summer, according to the iPaper, but that stance comes with the major caveat that they would be almost guaranteed to lose a significant amount of money from a sale.

One Premier League club have already shown an interest in striking a deal ahead of the summer, but they only value Wissa in the region of £15-20m, a damning reflection of how far he has fallen.

However, the iPaper goes on to state that Newcastle need to operate a “one in, one out” policy in order to remain compliant with PSR restrictions this summer, and that should effectively make their decision for them as far as Wissa is concerned.

There have been no signs that he will be able to turn his sorry start on Tyneside around, meaning that valuation could drop even further in the coming months, and as a result, the club are surely better served cutting their losses and rolling the dice on another striker target.

Eddie Howe urged to make tactical change to unlock Wissa

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider at the end of March that he feels Newcastle would get more out of Wissa by playing him as part of a striker duo.

However, the Scottish businessman hasn’t got his way so far, with Howe staying true to his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation in the recent defeat at Crystal Palace, and Wissa only being introduced in stoppage time.

Wyness feels that Wissa could still be the solution to Newcastle’s attacking issues, but expects that it may take a switch to a two-striker formation in order to truly unlock his capabilities.

Howe’s reluctance to tweak the system has been a point of frustration among the supporters in recent weeks, with many feeling that it has consigned the team to a difficult campaign.

However, Wissa also typically played at the top of a 4-2-3-1 during his time at Brentford, meaning it can be no excuse for his poor displays.
