Patrick Bamford: Leeds fans will be chuckling over Sheffield United star’s miss vs Wrexham

Patrick Bamford will not have shocked Leeds United fans at all with the Sheffield United star’s awful miss against Wrexham.

His shot on the 11th minute of the Blades’ game on Saturday, 21 March, was described as “miss of the day” on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, with the striker struggling to get into proceedings.

Bamford was often used as Leeds’ scapegoat during his final couple of seasons at Elland Road, at least when he wasn’t injured, and fans couldn’t wait for him to leave.

In his place, Leeds signed Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer, a striker who has now earned himself a spot in the latest England squad, notching 10 goals in his first 27 Premier League games.

Patrick Bamford continues to shine away from Leeds United

With Bamford reportedly on £70,000-a-week at Elland Road, it was no surprise to see so many fans wanting to see the back of him as he walked through the exit doors.

His injury problems were long-term and frustratingly constant, but since moving to Bramall Lane, the 32-year-old has notched nine goals in 20 Championship appearances.

He could have added another to his tally inside 11 minutes against Wrexham, only to fire his early effort past the right post of an open goal, leaving fans and pundits absolutely baffled by his miss.

With an xG (Expected goals) of 0.55 [FotMob], it was almost harder for the experienced striker to miss, but somehow he managed it. After seven years with the Whites, Leeds fans will not be the slightest bit surprised.

Sheffield United star’s miss will surprise absolutely nobody

Bamford’s relationship with the fans certainly ended on a sour note, linking up with Chris Wilder, with whom he had formed an unusual relationship as the two teams battled in the Championship.

Some supporters are even likely to take joy in the striker’s failures at Bramall Lane, while others have been over the moon to see him succeed after a difficult couple of seasons at Leeds.

Either way, very few will be surprised to see him miss an open goal from such close range, and many will be inclined to shout, “We told you so” at the Sheffield United fans who have been impressed by him.

He is likely to make up for his awful moment against Wrexham, but it was a moment that Leeds fans are all too familiar with from his time at Elland Road.
