Premier League bids fly in for Sheffield Wednesday defender amid takeover latest

Sheffield Wednesday are preparing for an overhaul as several prospective owners aim to complete a takeover.

A takeover of Sheffield Wednesday could be completed for around £30million, with interested parties circling.

According to the Daily Mail, former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is among three bidders vying for the Owls in a list that also includes a group led by Dunfermline Athletic co-owner James Bord.

Sheffield Wednesday are positive about the takeover news, with the club finally being rid of controversial chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

The Thai businessman’s chaotic ownership saw Hillsborough hit by several EFL points deductions, with Sheffield Wednesday now certain to be relegated from the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday field offers for young defender

Sheffield Wednesday rejected bids for Pierce Charles in the summer, with Premier League clubs expected to return for the Northern Ireland international next year.

The 20-year-old has missed the majority of the season with a shoulder injury, but made his return against Watford last week.

Charles is among a few young players who have shown promise for the Owls, despite the tumultuous situation that has engulfed Hillsborough.

Another of them, Yisa Alao, made his debut for Sheffield Wednesday this season, appearing twice in the Carabao Cup and impressing.

The 17-year-old has featured in several matchday squads in the Championship since, but is yet to be handed his debut.

Andy Giddings reported on Monday that Sheffield Wednesday have received a number of offers from Premier League clubs for Alao ahead of the January transfer window.

What has Henrik Pedersen said about Yisa Alao?

There is a reluctant acceptance at Sheffield Wednesday that the likes of Alao and Charles will be difficult to keep hold of in the coming transfer windows.

Speaking after the Owls’ Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town in September, manager Henrik Pedersen praised his young players.

We saw Jarvis [Thornton], we saw Sean [Fusire] and Ernie [Weaver] and Cole [McGhee] – and we saw Yisa [Alao], 16 years old who came in after 35 minutes,” the Dane said. “Big respect.

“They have to develop quick because they will get playing time.” Sheffield Wednesday will hope that it is exactly that which convinces their young stars to stay put.

A Premier League move would almost certainly mean a position in a developmental team, for now, with the likes of Alao perhaps open to the suggestion that their future prospects would fare better with a season or two in League One.
