Rangers attacker in talks to quit contract early, next move possible within days - Chris Jack

Rabbi Matondo is in talks to end his time at Rangers, three months before he was supposed to leave.

The Welsh winger has had a torrid time with injuries and has never really been able to have the desired impact at Ibrox.

Chris Jack claimed on 29 March that the 25-year-old is now in discussions with the Govan club to end his contract early.

Matondo looks set to finally end his Rangers nightmare, with a new move on the cards already, before his deal is set to expire.

Where is Matondo heading after Rangers exit?

Rangers and Matondo look set to reach an agreement to end his terms prematurely, which will free him up to get on with his career.

It seems as though he is wasting no time, as Jack reported that he is in talks with Brann Bergen in Norway.

He stated that the Gers could receive bonus payments from the potential deal, as a result of allowing the winger to leave early.

Where did it go wrong for Matondo at Rangers?

Matondo came to Glasgow with a lot of expectations, as a highly-rated youngster from Manchester City’s academy.

He clearly had the talent to succeed in Scotland, based on his eight goals and 11 assists for the Light Blues, but his fitness could not match.

Injuries regularly hampered his time in Govan, and stopped him from truly forging his way into the starting line-up.

Matondo missed 17 matches for club and country in the 2022-23 season, followed by an extra 18 games in 2023-24.

In the 2024-25 campaign, he missed 21 matches and was loaned to Hannover for the second-half of the season.

He underwent knee surgery in July, and has featured just three times under Danny Rohl for a total of 65 minutes.

The Wales international’s career with the Bears will forever be a case of what if, as he was never able to gain momentum.

Ultimately, an exit is the right decision for all parties, it is never going to work out for the injury-prone star and the Gers are better off getting his off the books.

New surroundings should give him the chance to revive his career, and if the Light Blues gain financially from it, it is a perfect solution.
