Rangers flop handed possible exit route as 2016 top-flight winners chase January deal - report

Kieran Dowell is expected to leave Rangers in the coming weeks.

Rangers have been remarkably active in January so far, with two new arrivals in Tochi Chukwuani and Tuur Rommens.

However, the Gers have also seen several players linked with exits from Ibrox, some of whom have certainly featured more than the others.

Dowell has been linked with a Rangers departure in January, and a new club has entered the fray for his signature after Hull City were mooted to have an interest.

One-time Premier League winners chase Kieran Dowell transfer

Dowell has no future at Rangers, and that has been made rather apparent over the last 12 months under several managers.

Since joining from Norwich in 2023, the 28-year-old has made just 38 appearances for the Light Blues, with five goal contributions.

He was sent out on loan to Birmingham City last season, where he reached double figures for goals and assists, seemingly attracting interest from other English clubs.

Now, Leicester City are said to have shown an interest in Dowell, according to Sportsboom, with the Foxes chasing a return to the top flight 10 years after they won the Premier League title.

Dowell is said to be eager for a return to English football, with a cut-price deal on the cards, given the fact that his contract in Glasgow expires in the summer.

Rangers needed to show more faith in Dowell

There’s no way back for Dowell at Rangers now, and Danny Rohl’s continued omission of him shows that.

However, his first campaign with the Gers actually brought a lot of positives.

Despite playing just shy of 500 league minutes, Dowell registered four goal contributions and was averaging 1.47 chances created per game.

His dribbling ability was crucial for the Light Blues getting up the pitch, with 71.4 per cent of his attempted dribbles being completed.

Had his gametime continued to increase, he could easily have become indispensable at Ibrox, but instead, he’s facing a January exit, and it will be a move that would suit all parties if it were to come to fruition.
