Rangers have agreement to seal signing before deadline today, contingency offer ready - report

Rangers have a loan deal agreed with Southampton for Cameron Archer, but Danny Rohl is working on a backup plan.

Archer has emerged as a target for Rangers over the final days of the winter transfer window, as Rohl desperately looks to sign a striker before Monday’s deadline.

Centre-forward is a position that the Gers have been looking to bolster throughout these winter sales, but have so far been frustrated in their attempts.

A host of names have been touted with moves to Ibrox, and Rohl is determined to get one through the door before the window shuts.

Danny Rohl plots Rayan Naderi fast-track deal if Archer swoop fails

Rohl has made a breakthrough in his pursuit to sign a striker, but he’s still not totally satisfied.

Rangers have agreed to sign Rayan Naderi in the summer, with the 22-year-old Hansa Rostock star now set to remain with the German third-tier side for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

So, whilst that has seemingly ended Rangers’ striker search for the summer, it’s not an ideal situation for Rohl, as he remains set on signing a centre-forward who can join right now.

This has taken him south of the border to EFL Championship side Southampton, and more specifically, Archer.

As per the Rangers Review on Monday, Rangers have a loan agreement in place for Archer, but it will depend on whether Southampton sign a replacement for Wolves-bound Adam Armstrong first.

It’s suggested that if that doesn’t happen, then the Saints wouldn’t commission a move to Glasgow for Archer, leaving Rangers back to square one.

However, in what would be a major twist to the storyline, Rangers could make one last offer to sign Naderi now, rather than wait until the summer, as a final contingency.

Archer would be game-changing capture for Rangers

Having fallen victim to a crowded centre-forward room at Southampton this season, Archer’s name has dropped off the radar somewhat.

But, to those fans who have seen him turn out for the likes of Middlesbrough and Preston, they’ll tell you that the 24-year-old is a deadly finisher if given the opportunity.

Archer fired home 11 times and provided six assists in 22 Championship appearances for Middlesbrough in 2022-23, and hit seven in 20 for Preston the season before that.

Since then, he’s struggled to make the step up to Premier League level, but even so, he remains a player with huge goalscoring potential if he were to sign for Rangers.

He could be the type of signing that truly changes the Premiership title race, and could tip it back into Rangers’ favour.
