Rangers line up loan-to-buy deal to sign striker who was bought for £8.7m in 2023 - report
Danny Rohl wants to sign a striker this month.
It’s been no secret that heading into the January transfer window, Rohl has been prioritising the signing of a striker for Rangers.
Youssef Chermiti’s form has improved in recent weeks, but the jury is still very much out on the Portuguese centre-forward, as he has been inconsistent since his September 2025 arrival from Everton.
Leeds’ Joel Piroe has emerged as a possible option for Rangers, as the Dutchman looks certain to leave Elland Road this winter having failed to cement a place in Daniel Farke’s team in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, an ambitious move for Hibernian star Kieron Bowie has been touted, but that looks a complex and unlikely deal to complete at this stage.

Rangers planning rescue mission for Bundesliga outcast
Outside of Chermiti, Rohl’s centre-forward options are extremely thin.
Bojan Miovski has scored eight goals in 26 total appearances for the Gers this season, but the big issue is that only three of those have come in the Premiership.
The only other natural striker Rohl could turn to is Danilo, but the 26-year-old Brazilian has just two goals in 13 league games to his name this season, and looks likely to leave Glasgow this month.
As such, with Rangers fighting for the Premiership title, there remains a real risk that Rohl’s cutting edge in attack may not be sharp enough to fire them to the title.

However, Rohl may now be about to finally get his centre-forward wish, as a report from Fussball Europa on Tuesday has revealed that Rangers are close to signing Tomas Cvancara.
It’s reported to be an initial loan deal with the option for the Gers to buy the striker from Borussia Monchengladbach, but Serie A duo Hellas Verona and Cremonese are also interested.
Cvancara returned from his loan with Turkish side Antalyaspor in December after they stopped paying him his salary, but have banished him from all first-team activities and told him to find a new club.
The 25-year-old hasn’t been involved in Gladbach’s first three games of 2026, and is evidently not part of the long-term plans there.
Gladbach paid 10million euros/£8.7m to sign him from Sparta Prague in the summer of 2023, but he’s made just 54 appearances for them since then and scored eight goals.
Cvancara’s career so far
Standing at around 6’3″ tall, Cvancara would bring an obvious physical presence to Rangers’ forward line.
Beginning his senior career in 2018 in his native Czech Republic with Jablonec, a 2021-22 season that saw him bag nine goals in 24 total appearances for them was enough to catch the attention of Sparta Prague.
He would then sign for the Czech giants in the January of 2022, where he would go on to score 24 times in 49 games, including a 2022-23 campaign that saw him net 15 times in 30 appearances.
That was when Monchengladbach swooped in, as they splashed out £8.7m to secure his services in the summer of 2023, but the big striker has struggled to adapt to German football.
After making 30 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit last season and scoring two goals, he was loaned out to Turkish side Antalyaspor for the 2025-26 season, but returned to Germany in December with just two goals to his name.
Therefore, his signing would present as a major gamble for Rangers, as he has evidenced that he can struggle to transfer his form in two different nations now.
However, he did show that he can score goals at a high level with Sparta Prague, and at 25, is only just coming into the prime of his career with perhaps a very big point to prove.
