Rangers striker signing today now dead in the water as clock ticks to deadline - report

Rangers’ move for Cameron Archer looks to be dead in the water.

Archer emerged as an Ibrox target with Danny Rohl desperate to bring in a striker before the 11:00 pm GMT deadline on 2 February.

The Gers had a loan agreement in place with Southampton for the forward, but it was contingent on the Saints’ own business.

However, the move is looking like it will not happen now, after the latest developments south of the border.

Archer has had a solid season, as the Sofascore graphic below highlights, but it appears he will be staying in England.

Why Cameron Archer to Rangers has stalled

The Saints were trying to bring in two strikers to replace the 24-year-old, due to Adam Armstrong’s impending move to Wolves.

Alex Crook claimed on 2 February that the south coast-based club tried to sign a second striker as well as Cyle Larin, but that move has stalled.

He stated that the Gers move for Archer now looks “highly unlikely”, which will be a huge blow for Rohl.

The Bears have agreed a deal to sign Ryan Naderi from Hansa Rostock, but that is for the summer, so it looks like no new striker will be arriving in Govan before the deadline.

Why the 49ers are to blame for no striker signing

The 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh, the Gers’ majority owners, have waited until the final days of the window to try and sign a striker.

It was arguably Rohl’s most important need, as the likes of Bojan Miovski and Youssef Chermiti have struggled, with just eight goals and four goals, respectively.

The fact that they have not sorted it and been left scampering for deals at the end of the window threatens to derail their whole season.

Rohl’s side are in contention for the Scottish Premiership title, but if they cannot get a forward over the line and overhaul Celtic and Hearts, it will be a huge issue.

The ownership and the recruitment team could have placed a higher bid for Naderi to tempt the third-tier German outfit to sell now, rather than agree to a summer deal.

Then losing out on Archer might not have felt like such a blow, but that is not the case, and it has gone from a promising window to a dismal one for the Light Blues.
