Rangers title race is on: Will Russell Martin get SPFL winners' medal?

Danny Rohl has Rangers back in Scottish Premiership title contention after his side’s Parkhead heroics.

The Russell Martin era at Ibrox is no longer threatening to define Rangers‘ 2025-26 season.

Rangers beat Celtic 3-1 on Saturday to hand the Gers their first Old Firm win in three games, pushing Rohl‘s men right back into the title race.

A Youssef Chermiti double followed by a Mikey Moore strike sealed a memorable comeback win for all of those Glaswegians of a blue persuasion, and sparked furious Celtic fans to direct their anger at Wilfried Nancy.

It was a win that moved Rangers level on 38 points with Celtic, and ensured any talk of their season being over swiftly silenced.

Would Russell Martin get a winners’ medal if Rangers win Premiership title?

Rangers fans will now be dreaming of celebrating their club’s first Premiership title since 2020-21 this term.

If they are to be crowned 2025-26 champions, then it will be from a season that already has the makings of a Hollywood script.

After being taken over by the 49ers Enterprises in the summer, their first managerial appointment, Martin, was an unmitigated disaster, and threatened to set Rangers back for years to come.

However, they look to have got their second dugout decision in his sacking and the subsequent hiring of Rohl, spot on.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has turned around results and performances at Ibrox, and is looking every bit of one of European football’s highest-rated young coaches: a reputation which he arrived at Rangers carrying.

So, if he and his team do win the Premiership title this season, would Martin still be issued with a winners’ medal?

As per rule C40 of the Rules and Regulations of the Scottish Professional Football League, it’s stated that: “The Company shall present to the Champion Club of the League 25 League Championship Medals for Players, other staff and Officials. Additional League Championship Medals may be purchased from the Company with the prior consent of the Board.

“Only those Players who participated in League Matches for the Champion Club in the relevant Season will be eligible to receive such medals.”

Therefore, Martin wouldn’t qualify for a winners’ medal.

Rangers have to back Rohl in the transfer market this month

Rangers are expected to be busy in the January transfer window, and their win at Celtic Park on Saturday should help spur on the 49ers decision-makers to back Rohl this month.

He’s showing them that he’s a top-class young manager, and one that can get the best out of players that previously had been showing very little under Martin.

• Rohl has a 73 per cent win rate in the Premiership as Rangers boss
• He’s won eight, drawn two and lost one of his first 11 league games in charge
• Rangers only registered four shots on target against Celtic, with three resulting in goals

Rohl and the Rangers board appear aligned on the transfer front, which is something the German didn’t have the luxury of during his time at Sheffield Wednesday when working under former Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri.

So, there should be a real enthusiasm among the Rangers hierarchy to really loosen the purse strings this winter and give Rohl what he wants, and if they do, he could deliver them a Premiership trophy.
