Raul Jimenez sends message as big-name defender agrees loan move

Charlton Athletic have completed the signing of Conor Coady on loan from Wrexham until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old centre-back has struggled since making a summer move to the Welsh side, and has only made six appearances to date.

With Wrexham pushing for promotion to the Premier League, it appears that Phil Parkinson’s side have already outgrown the centre-back.

As a result, Coady was linked away from Wrexham, with Charlton capturing the 32-year-old on Thursday.

Many players were quick to react to the news including current Fulham star Raul Jimenez.

While Coady was once an England international and a Premier League regular, age has well and truly caught up with the defender.

Last season, he was part of the Leicester City side that got relegated from the Premier League without a fight.

Now, after struggling at Wrexham, he will now be aiming to keep the Addicks in the Championship.

His loan spell could be a way for Coady to get his career back on track, especially if he receives regular game time.

Upon Charlton announcing the signing on their Instagram on 29 January, Coady’s former Wolves teammate, Jimenez, reacted to the news.

The Mexico international striker simply liked the post, with the two players clearly still on good terms.

Where did it go wrong for Coady at Wrexham?

At Wrexham, when Coady did play, he did not do a good job at convincing Parkinson that he should be a regular.

According to Fotmob on 31 January, while his passing stats were impressive, his defensive stats were poor.

Per 90 minutes, he was winning only 56 per cent of his duels and 36.4 per cent of his aerial duels.

On top of this, Wrexham were averaging 2.04 goals conceded and a 2.58 xG conceded when he was on the pitch.

Therefore, it is no wonder that Parkinson was willing to offload the defender, with it being clear that it wasn’t working out.

Hopefully, Coady can put together a series of good performances at Charlton between now and the end of the season to help put himself in the shop window for the summer, or even convince Wrexham that he deserves a second chance.
