“At the moment, the way is clear – El Mala looks very likely to be playing Premier League football next season. Now we have to see whether he ends up at Brighton, which is the current plan, or if FC Köln say it won’t work because of the money on the table.”

While the club did return to the Champions League this season, their swift and brutal last 16 exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain underlined the gulf in class between them and Europe’s elite. Having lost their last three Premier League games on the bounce, Liam Rosenior’s side are now in a desperate scrap to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition again next season.

With the current recruitment policy perhaps not paying off, Egbhali has suggested the club will target ‘ready-made’ players this summer to take the Blues ‘to the next level.’

Cole, who won three Premier League titles during Chelsea’s most successful era, believes the current squad is crying out for experience and leadership in defence and up front.

Lewandowski is coming to the end of an extraordinary career with his contract at Barcelona expiring at the end of the current campaign. At 37, the former Bayern Munich star is still a potent goal threat with 17 in 40 appearances to his name this season.

Stones meanwhile has been an integral figure under Pep Guardiola at City but is another who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

While injuries have limited him to just 15 appearances, this term, Cole believes the 31-year-old can still play a key role on guiding a young Chelsea defence.

‘We need experience, someone to come in and support the young players,’ Cole exclusively told Metro when asked for his dream signings this summer.

‘I would be looking at Lewandoski. If his contract is up at Barcelona, get him in for a year.

‘That could work, someone to come in and help the young players. He is a big name, has that stature and would be a huge presence in the dressing room. I think he could really help Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.

‘John Stones as well maybe if City let his contract expire. He is another who could be an big presence in the dressing room, to help and nurture the great young centre-halves we have at Chelsea. He might not be able to play 50 or 60 games anymore but will improve players around him.’

Arsenal and Manchester City have led the way in getting football operations off the pitch right in recent years with Manchester United getting their act together somewhat last summer.

While Cole believes a change in how Chelsea go about their recruitment would produce results, he is not convinced it starts this summer.

‘I would welcome it but I don’t think it will happen,’ he said. ‘They will be financial decisions again. Arsenal and Manchester City have been run smoothly to build a football team on the grass. Obviously there is business in place these days because clubs are huge cooperate entities. But unless Chelsea do that fully, they will struggle.

‘You still have to get the right players in. If the right players is 28 years-old and costs a fortune, you buy the right player. Buy the right players to build the team.’

That’s according to a report from Fichajes, which states that the Red Devils could face paying around €35m for Rios, which is not too bad in this market.

Al Hilal are keen to bring in Hughes from Liverpool to work on their recruitment, but for now it looks like he’s set to stay at Anfield, according to talkSPORT.

Frank Lampard has distanced himself from rumours linking Coventry with a loan move for Chelsea’s Jesse Derry, insisting his focus remains on the club securing a return to the Premier League.

Coventry are within touching distance of sealing automatic promotion from the Championship, with a draw away to Blackburn Rovers enough to send Lampard’s men up on Friday night.

The Sky Blues have been dominant in the English second tier under Lampard and hold an imperious ten-point lead over second-placed Ipswich with three games remaining of the campaign.

According to talkSPORT, Lampard plans to utilise his deep Stamford Bridge connections to get a temporary deal over the line for the highly rated 18-year-old forward, who can play on the left and through the middle.

Derry, the son of former QPR and Crystal Palace midfielder Shaun, made his senior Chelsea debut as a substitute in the side’s FA Cup victory over Hull City in February and has been tipped for a bright future with the Blues.

Asked about the rumours surrounding Derry and, more generally, how far along Coventry are in planning for next season, Lampard told reporters: ‘Not that far, if I’m honest, because of the jeopardy of the season.

‘I know it feels like in the last week or so things have felt more apparent but at the same time, me personally, I’ve been focusing on the job in hand.’

‘I’m not stupid. I know that this may happen and there’s a lot of work to do at the football club, whether it be things at the training ground to try and get the levels to what I know is the Premier League, because I’ve been there in different forms.

‘So those are all things that the football club has to really broach quickly, and we’re all aware of that.

‘But in terms of individual players, I’m not saying all those rumours [regarding Jesse Derry] are false, but they’re definitely not true as a fact.

‘And that’s one of the difficult things now in football, recruitment, because you’re as good as it, to a degree, because you need good players. And I think the club has done a really good job in terms of that at where we are in the Championship because you can see where we are in terms of what we spend etcetera.’

Lampard urged both supporters and those in the media not to give too much weight to rumours linking Coventry with potential incomings and outgoings at this stage.

‘It’s not a parachute team but we’ve had our way of doing it and that’s going to change this summer, if we get to where we want to get to because the level will go up,’ he added.

‘So there’s a lot of work to be done but the rumours that are whirling around now, I wouldn’t hold too much to them, with respect.’

Derry, who has scored eight times in 15 appearances for the England Under-19s, is tied into a contract with Chelsea until June 2029.

The teenager joined Chelsea on a four-year deal from Crystal Palace last summer and has played the vast majority of his football in Premier League 2 this season.

Facing the media prior to Chelsea’s FA Cup fifth-round victory win over Wrexham last month, Liam Rosenior revealed how Derry had ‘really impressed’ him with his application on the training ground.

‘Ryan [Kavuma-McQueen] and Jesse will travel with the group, so they will be part of the squad for Wrexham,’ Rosenior told reporters.

‘Jesse has really impressed me, Ryan’s impressed, but it’s not just those two. There have been a few that I’ve got to see in training when they’ve been brought up that I’m really happy with.

‘Reggie Watson has trained with us a few times, he’s really impressed me. It’s scary the age that he is. Young Mahdi [Nicoll-Jazuli] has been up a few times, he’s an outstanding talent as well.

‘There are some outstanding young players in the group. We just need to make sure we put them in at the right time and they get the experiences that they need to continue their development.’

A month earlier, Rio Ferdinand named Derry as one of four young English talents to keep an eye on in the Premier League, along with Rio Ngumoha, Max Dowman and JJ Gabriel.

‘You know the four, right now, if I was going to put money on and going these four, and you know what, it probably won’t even be these four that go and dominate the Premier League and do crazy things,’ the legendary ex-Manchester United defender said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel.

‘If you were going to put your money on four kids right now, in the Premier League to do their thing, based on what you’re seeing now, you’ve got Rio at Liverpool, you’ve got Max Dowman, you’ve got JJ Gabriel at Manchester United and Jesse Derry at Chelsea.

‘Jesse Derry, I know his dad, Shaun, he’s an ex-player, but I know the kid, wow, ridiculous, not only a talent, but an actual, like, as a kid who loves, loves the game.

Martin Zubimendi shut down speculation over a potential transfer move to Real Madrid after Arsenal progressed to the Champions League semi-finals, insisting such talk was ‘in the past’.

The 27-year-old midfielder came away with the Player of the Match award as Arsenal edged past Sporting to secure a place in the last four of this year’s competition, keeping their hopes of a double alive in the process.

It was a largely turgid and cagey affair over the course of the two legs, with Kai Havertz’s last-gasp strike in Lisbon proving the difference after Wednesday’s meeting at the Emirates ended goalless.

The Gunners started brightly in north London but a nervousness came over the home crowd as the visitors gained a foothold in the game, hitting the post through Geny Catamo before Maxi Araujo went close from inside the area.

Arsenal’s best opportunity fell to second-half substitute Leandro Trossard, who headed against the woodwork from a corner as Sporting came up short in pursuit of a breakthrough late on.

The result saw Arsenal reach successive Champions League semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history, setting up what promises to be an intriguing tie against Atletico Madrid.

Mikel Arteta’s men will head to Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium for the first leg on April 29. The two teams will resume their battle six days later at the Emirates on May 5.

Speaking on Spanish radio station Cadena SER shortly after the final whistle, Zubimendi said he was expecting a ‘different’ kind of contest against Atleti following Arsenal’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Diego Simeone’s side in the league phase.

‘I already know them [Atletico Madrid] well, and they have a match against Real Sociedad this weekend, so we’ll see how it goes,’ Zubimendi told the El Larguero programme.

‘Anyway, I think they’re in great form, with a lot of confidence and spirit, as is typical of Atletico Madrid.

‘We already know them from the group stage but this will be different.’

Asked if he will be watching this weekend’s Copa del Rey final between Atleti and former club Real Sociedad, Zubimendi replied: ‘To the death, to the death, obviously.

‘I’ll put it on at dinner.’

Real Madrid had been credited with a strong interest in Zubimendi before the Spain international joined Arsenal in a deal worth around £56million last summer.

And despite still only being in his debut season with the Gunners, the rumours have persisted in Zubimendi’s native country, with Los Blancos reportedly in the market for midfield reinforcements.

‘I have no answer, but I haven’t been paying much attention to all that,’ Zubimendi said in response to these rumours linking him with Madrid, who were eliminated by Bayern Munich in Wednesday’s other clash.

‘I think that’s all in the past and I have other things on my mind. It’s not a bad thing.’

Speaking after Arsenal’s progression, Arteta made sure to highlight how his squad had made history by reaching the semi-final stage for a second time in as many years.

‘It’s a great night, I’m so proud of everybody at the club,’ he told Arsenal’s official website.

‘Thank you to our supporters for the manner in which they followed the team. It’s the first time we’ve [reached the semi-finals consecutively] in 140 years, so that tells you the difficulty and magnitude of what we’ve done. 

‘I think we don’t realise it now, but we’ll realise it in a few years, so don’t take for granted what we’ve done.

‘It’s extremely difficult to achieve, and it’s never been achieved [by ourselves], so big gratitude to our players and everyone who’s contributed to achieving that.’

On Arsenal’s overall performance over the two legs, ‘We’re not perfect, we want to improve in every area.

‘But we have two magical nights to play against Atletico and we’re certainly going to prepare well for that.

‘We’ll take things from [Arsenal’s win over Atleti in October] and games they have played recently, but we’re going to have to go to Madrid, be ourselves, and compete in the manner we have – and then we’ll have a big chance to win it.’

Nathaniel Brown says he is ‘aware’ of interest from Arsenal but remains fully focused on seeing out a successful end to the season with Eintracht Frankfurt for the time being.

Brown, 22, enjoyed an eye-catching breakout campaign last term, making 25 league appearances in the Bundesliga to help Eintracht seal Champions League qualification with a third-place finish.

The left-back’s outstanding run of form earned him his first senior international call-up in October, with his debut coming in Germany’s 4-0 victory over Luxembourg in World Cup qualifying.

In the proceeding weeks and months, Brown has taken his game to another level altogether, further establishing himself as one of the most exciting young talents in German football, while adding two more caps to his collection.

He has also proven himself to be a real threat from an attacking perspective, chipping in with four goals and four assists this season with Eintracht sitting seventh in the table.

However, Brown’s performances have not gone unnoticed and top clubs from across Europe are reportedly forming a queue for the full-back ahead of the summer transfer window.

Arsenal are said to have added Brown to their shortlist of targets at left-back, while the likes of AC Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City have also been credited with a strong interest.

But in a wide-ranging interview with Sport Bild this week, Brown insisted he was only thinking about Eintracht’s remaining five matches of the season, with European places up for grabs.

Asked whether he associates anything in particular with the sum €65.3million (£56.8m), Brown told Sport Bild: ‘No idea. It’s definitely a lot of money.’

This was the record fee that Chelsea paid for a left-back when they signed Marc Cucurella from Brighton in 2022. Asked whether he aimed to break this record in the summer, Brown responded: ‘That’s a really staggering sum.

‘But frankly, I’m not thinking about figures like that or a transfer in the summer at all.

‘My focus is entirely on Eintracht Frankfurt and our goal of qualifying for Europe. And then I’d love to be at the World Cup.

‘Then I’ll see what happens in the summer. It’s hard to plan in football, so I’m not thinking about it.’

Asked if he knew about interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester City, Brown replied: ‘Yes, I’m aware of it, but it doesn’t affect me.

‘I’m concentrating on the goals I can control. Nothing else interests me right now.’

Brown has even surprised himself with the speed at which he has gone from playing for FC Nurnberg’s reserve team to competing at an elite level with both Eintracht and Germany.

‘I never imagined it would happen so quickly,’ he explained.

‘Of course, I always believed in myself, but this journey has been incredibly fast-paced.

‘It was always my goal to become a professional footballer someday. My life has always revolved around football.’

On Eintracht’s season as a whole, Brown added: ‘It’s been a mixed bag.

‘We’ve had a lot of ups and downs. That’s really frustrating. We know we want to give the fans more consistency and wins in return.

‘We’ve had a tough time, but we’ve recovered and are doing better again, even if it’s not perfect yet.

‘Personally, things are going great for me and I’ve made another step forward in my development this season. But after a loss, I can’t really be happy if my own performance was good.’

Brown put pen to paper on a contract extension with Eintracht early last year, tying him to the club until June 2030.

There is no release clause in his current deal at Deutsche Bank Park.

Coventry head coach Frank Lampard is reportedly exploring a move to sign Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry on loan for next season.

Derry left Crystal Palace to join Chelsea’s academy last summer, putting pen to paper on a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The 18-year-old forward went on to make his senior Chelsea debut in the side’s FA Cup fourth-round victory over Hull City in February, coming on as a late replacement for Estevao at the MKM Stadium.

But Derry, the son of ex-QPR and Palace midfielder Shaun, has since gone on to make just one more first-team appearance against Wrexham, with fierce competition for places blocking his path to regular first-team minutes under Liam Rosenior.

According to talkSPORT, Coventry boss Lampard has recognised a potential opportunity and is planning to utilise his deep connections with Chelsea to get a temporary deal over the line for Derry in the summer.

Coventry currently sit ten points clear at the top of the Championship table and will secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League should they avoid defeat away to Blackburn Rovers on Friday night.

The Sky Blues have, therefore, begun to draw up plans for the upcoming transfer window, with club bosses keen to strengthen their squad in several areas in preparation for the English top flight.

The report claims a loan move for Derry is ‘already being lined up’ and Coventry believe the proposed switch could ‘prove beneficial for both parties’.

Derry’s current contract with Chelsea, which he signed upon his arrival from Palace, runs through to June 2029.

A month earlier, Rio Ferdinand named Derry as one of four ‘ridiculous’ young talents to keep an eye on in the Premier League, along with Liverpool’s Rio Ngumoha, Arsenal’s Max Dowman and Manchester United’s JJ Gabriel.

‘You know the four, right now, if I was going to put money on and going these four, and you know what, it probably won’t even be these four that go and dominate the Premier League and do crazy things,’ the former Manchester United defender said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel.

‘If you were going to put your money on four kids right now, in the Premier League to do their thing, based on what you’re seeing now, you’ve got Rio at Liverpool, you’ve got Max Dowman, you’ve got JJ Gabriel at Manchester United and Jesse Derry at Chelsea.

‘Jesse Derry, I know his dad, Shaun, he’s an ex-player, but I know the kid, wow, ridiculous, not only a talent, but an actual, like, as a kid who loves, loves the game.

‘You know, certain kids, they just love football and live and breathe. All the time, he makes that and the balls that you see, like, still, one of those kids.’

He has also proven himself to be a real threat from an attacking perspective, chipping in with four goals and four assists this season with Eintracht sitting seventh in the table.

However, Brown’s performances have not gone unnoticed and top clubs from across Europe are reportedly forming a queue for the full-back ahead of the summer transfer window.

Arsenal are said to have added Brown to their shortlist of targets at left-back, while the likes of AC Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City have also been credited with a strong interest.

‘My focus is entirely on Eintracht Frankfurt and our goal of qualifying for Europe. And then I’d love to be at the World Cup.

‘Then I’ll see what happens in the summer. It’s hard to plan in football, so I’m not thinking about it.’

Asked if he knew about interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester City, Brown replied: ‘Yes, I’m aware of it, but it doesn’t affect me.

‘I’m concentrating on the goals I can control. Nothing else interests me right now.’

Brown has even surprised himself with the speed at which he has gone from playing for FC Nurnberg’s reserve team to competing at an elite level with both Eintracht and Germany.

‘I never imagined it would happen so quickly,’ he explained.

‘Of course, I always believed in myself, but this journey has been incredibly fast-paced.

‘It was always my goal to become a professional footballer someday. My life has always revolved around football.’

On Eintracht’s season as a whole, Brown added: ‘It’s been a mixed bag.

‘We’ve had a lot of ups and downs. That’s really frustrating. We know we want to give the fans more consistency and wins in return.

‘We’ve had a tough time, but we’ve recovered and are doing better again, even if it’s not perfect yet.

‘Personally, things are going great for me and I’ve made another step forward in my development this season. But after a loss, I can’t really be happy if my own performance was good.’

Brown put pen to paper on a contract extension with Eintracht early last year, tying him to the club until June 2030.

There is no release clause in his current deal at Deutsche Bank Park.
