'Rubbish' - Ex-Aberdeen chief blasts Ally McCoist over his Rangers outburst

Rangers legend Ally McCoist was wrong to blast the SPFL over the schedule of the post-split fixture list.

That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, after McCoist claimed Celtic were running Scottish football.

McCoist could not believe that Celtic would host Hearts on the final day of the season, whilst Rangers would travel to Falkirk for a third time.

The fixture list though ensures that all teams in the league play 19 home games and 19 away matches, with the Scottish Premiership title still all to play for.

Rangers are currently second in the league table, just a point below leaders Hearts, with the two sides set to meet again at Tynecastle next month.

Ally McCoist claim labelled as ‘rubbish’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes McCoist’s comments have lost him a “little bit of credibility.”

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness states that there has been “no bias” in the fixture schedule.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “We all like Ally McCoist to a degree, but I’m afraid this is rubbish.

“I looked at the mathematical formulas around the scheduling of these post-split games. And there is no bias whatsoever in this at all. And it is the classic Rangers, Celtic Divide, I’m afraid.

“If somebody said it was black, the others would say it was white. And that’s the case it is. I’m afraid McCoist has lost a little bit of credibility in saying that. I thought he was above all that sort of partisanship.

“You can’t take it out on him. He’s blue through and through. But I’m afraid he’s wrong in this case, and if he had a look at the mathematics, he’d understand the case behind it.”

Rangers could be the team to beat in title race

Wyness also told Football Insider that Rangers are the team in form in the Scottish Premiership heading into the final five fixtures.

The title race is still too close to call, but the Gers have won their past four league matches and scored six against Falkirk last time out.

Martin O’Neill’s experience of winning titles could give Celtic the edge, although the Hoops’ performances of late suggest they could drop points again before the end of the season.

Hearts continue to lead the pack, and Derek McInnes’ side are chasing history if they can beat the Old Firm to the title.
