Sandro Tonali: Paolo Di Canio to infuriate fans as Newcastle risk facing Alexander Isak repeat

Sandro Tonali’s continuous links away from Newcastle United will be filling absolutely nobody with confidence this summer.

The Italian international has massively missed Bruno Guimaraes in the centre of the park, so with the Brazilian sidelined, Tonali has been forced to take hold of the ropes at St James’ Park.

However, with three straight defeats against Barcelona, Sunderland and Crystal Palace, Eddie Howe’s future is under huge pressure ahead of the summer.

A change of manager could drastically change Newcastle’s transfer plans, and with the Magpies sitting 10th in the Premier League table, supporters are concerned that several high-profile exits could be on the cards.

Sandro Tonali expected to leave Newcastle United

Transfers are certainly a sore spot for the Magpies, following on from the club’s entire ordeal over Alexander Isak’s forced exit during the summer of 2025.

The Sweden international finally got his move away from St James’ Park, wanting to improve his wage and career progression, but Newcastle fans have been basking in his struggles at Anfield so far.

Of course, with Howe’s side not even guaranteed to finish in the top half of the table this season, several other stars could follow in Isak’s footsteps, and there have already been whispers of Tonali forcing a move.

He was heavily linked with Arsenal during the winter transfer window, and while those rumours were debunked quite quickly, the talented midfielder is now being pressured by a football icon.

Paolo Di Canio is adding to the drama at St James’ Park

Paolo Di Canio, enemy No.1 at St James’ Park after managing their bitter rivals Sunderland, believes that Inter Milan should be Tonali’s destination, all while firing a dig at the Magpies.

Speaking to Italian media, when asked about who Tonali should sign for, he said: “Inter, who already have a true playmaker (Hakan Calhanoglu). He’s by far our (Italy’s) best outfield player, but where does he play? In the 10th-placed team in the English league.”

Pressure from the outside is bound to turn the midfielder’s head ahead of the summer window, and so too will continuous links. Newcastle might have no choice but to let him go.

Football Insider understands that Newcastle are already planning for life without Tonali, and that seems like a much safer option than getting caught up in another transfer saga this summer.
