Sources: Bundesliga club set sights on luring senior Brighton man

Fabian Hurzeler is high up on Bayer Leverkusen’s managerial shortlist and they could make a move to lure him from Brighton if Kasper Hjulmand is sacked, sources have told Football Insider.

Recent reports out of Germany have claimed that Leverkusen are keen admirers of Hurzeler and the impressive job he has done in charge of Brighton over the last two seasons.

They are considering dismissing current boss Kasper Hjulmand, despite a lack of any internal issues, with a fresh start potentially on the horizon after a tumultuous campaign.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Hurzeler is being watched by numerous German clubs and Leverkusen have had him on their radar for several years.

His Seagulls side currently sit 10th in the Premier League after winning four of their last five Premier League matches.

Leverkusen rate Fabian Hurzeler highly and could approach him to be their next boss

Hurzeler’s own position at the Amex Stadium was being questioned in the early stages of the season, but he has proved the doubters wrong by guiding Brighton into genuine European contention as it stands.

He already has plenty of experience in the German game after spending 18 months at St Pauli and guiding them to promotion to the Bundesliga.

Hurzeler’s managerial stats at Brighton

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “(Hurzeler’s) stock is still quite high in Germany. He did very well at St. Pauli before Brighton lured him to England.

“Leverkusen were previously linked with Hurzeler around the time when Xabi Alonso was linked with a move away from the BayArena.

“I’m sure that a lot of German clubs will be interested in someone like Hurzeler, who’s done very well for himself in the Premier League. He’s still only 33, which is crazy to think about really.

“It looked like he could be on the way out of Brighton earlier this season when they had a real sort of dip in form but he’s turned things around.

“They had that great win against Liverpool last weekend and are just six points behind the top five.

“They’ll be hopeful that they can have a strong end to the season and maybe finish in the European places, which would be another big achievement for Brighton and Hurzeler.”

Brighton want to extend James Milner’s contract as soon as possible

Hurzeler has drawn upon Milner’s experience and quality throughout his time at the club so far, and wants to see him stay beyond the end of his current contract this summer.

The 40-year-old broke the record for the most Premier League appearances of all-time last month, and has continued to be a driving force in the Seagulls’ midfield.

Sources have told Football Insider that Brighton plan to offer Milner a new deal, and there is a growing feeling that he will continue at the club beyond the end of this season.
