Sources: Liverpool's updated Arne Slot sack plan revealed

Liverpool will not sack Arne Slot for now and hope to stick with the manager until at least the end of the season.

Slot’s side beat Qarabag 6-0 in the Champions League to ensure smooth passage into the round of 16, but it has done little to distract from their league woes.

The Reds have now won just five or their last 18 Premier League games after their 3-2 defeat against Bournemouth last time out, piling pressure on the manager’s position.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Slot must lead Liverpool to Champions League qualification if he wants to keep his job.

While there is no immediate pressure on the manager’s position, failure to meet expectations over the remainder of the season would likely see him dismissed.

Liverpool make Arne Slot sack decision

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 27 January that Slot is under intense pressure at Liverpool with fans beginning to turn.

The priority at Anfield remains to stick by the manager as things stand, but if he cannot turn around their league form they could be forced into a decision.

Liverpool are looking to go as far as possible into the Champions League while also qualifying via the league, and must improve on their current sixth-placed standing.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Yeah, look as things stand right now Liverpool want to back Arne Slot, they want to give him at least until the end of the season.

“Their Premier League title defense has been nowhere near good enough, they’ve had too many defeats and they’re languishing in sixth place.

“If they were to miss that in Champions League qualification, it will just increase pressure even more on Arne Slot.

“But look, it’s a results business. If results don’t improve, it’s going to increase speculation about his future and Liverpool may have to act, but that would be the last case scenario I think for the Liverpool board.

“It’s a key period for slot now he really needs to build a bit of momentum get some results.

“As I said the minimum I think Liverpool would be expecting would be qualification for next season’s Champions League.”

Virgil van Dijk transfer update emerges at Anfield

Amid what has been a largely disappointing season so far for Liverpool, speculation has also emerged surrounding the future of Virgil van Dijk.

However, Football Insider revealed on 26 January that Liverpool have no plans to sell Van Dijk in the near future, despite his disappointing performances.

Instead, the plan remains to let the captain see out his contract which is currently set to run until 2027, and he will be a big part of next season’s plans.

The Merseysiders are keen to add to their long-term centre-back options, with Ibrahima Konate set to head out of the door, and will not weaken the position.

Van Dijk has come under fire after Liverpool’s defeat to Bournemouth last time out, but he is yet to miss a single minute of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.
